Capital
Tallinn is the major capital of Estonia with a population of approximately 390 thousand. Located along the coast of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland, is one of the largest cities of Estonia in habiting nearly thirty percent of the total population in Estonia. Home of one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe, Toopea Hill, located the center of Tallinn, features architecture which originated in the 15th and 17th century. Various notable site in Toopea are the Russian grand orthodox church, the Nevky cathedral, and their St Mary’s Cathedral, which is considered to be the country oldest cathedral since 1229. Other cities in Estonia are Tartu, Narvu, Kohtla, Jarve, and Parnu. Languages spoken are Estonian, Russian, and German, all of which is widely well-spoken and understood.
History on Estonia
In the 13th century, Estonia was under constant rule and resisting assault from neighboring nations until declaring independence until the 1990’s. in 1346, the Danish, who were in possession of northern Estonia, sold their territory off to the Teutonic knight of Germany, a religious military order back in medieval times who had possession of southern Estonia and Latvia(past known as Livonia). Under the knight’s rule, the Estonians were reduced to serfdom, which classifies as the lowest class of society (peasants, slaves, etc.). In 1526, the Swedish were next to in line to take over. Less than 200 years later, in 1721, under the Peace of Nystad, Russia became Sweden’s successor in control over Estonia. Estonia was subjected under Baltic and Czarist until months ending of WWI. After World War II, Europe emerged as a continent torn between two very different political ideologies, Communism and Democracy. As the two major superpowers, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the United States, struggled to defend their respective governmental policies, the European Continent was caught in an intrinsic struggle to preserve the autonomy which had taken so long to achieve. During the Cold War, Eastern European nations struggled to achieve autonomy with the help of the West's dedication to break the Soviet sphere of influence. After the disintegration of the USSR, the struggle for autonomy among nations shifted from an intense, inward, nationalistic struggle to break away from a superpower to a commitment of international unity and cooperation as nations began to take moral and political responsibility for their actions.
The period 1550 to 1660 was a period of extreme dislocation and major change, within which saw periods boom and bust in various regions across Europe. As Americans we live in isolation, surrounded by advertisements, electronic screens, fast food, the internet, etc. We live these lives while thousands scream out in hunger and thirst begging to nourish their families. Living lives in excess, often unknowingly supporting a system that is not sustainable, breeds capitalism, and unplugs us from the rest of the world. Having been raised in a typical suburban home my ideas of culture were going to Olive Garden or walking by Riverside in Minneapolis. However, Geography 111 has challenged what I believed, truly allowing me to grasp that I am not part of solution I am problem that spreads neocolonialism, capitalism, and western culture wherever a profit can be made. Learning about these topics and combining it with a geographical perspective I know will enable me to break from the molds and forge new paths.

On the surface, Russia appears to be a country with brutal cold temperatures, harsh laws, and intimidating culture. After taking a good look into Russian facts and culture, however, you will find that this large country has much more to offer. From gorgeous landscapes to traditions that go back for hundreds of years, beneath the seemingly icy exterior of Russia lies a country rich with history and beauty.

Geography is the foundation to how civilizations and societies develop. Based on location, geography determines the amount of water available, temperature, available resources, and a variety of essentials. To form a civilization, the geography gives insight to whether a community can sustain, and how people need to adapt to continue growing. Ancient civilizations had to take many factors into account, and learn to adapt to the environment to become as advanced as they were. General geographical features which have an essential role in shaping societies include rivers, seas, and the flora of what the natural environment provides.
The state of Hawaii is composed of 132 islands, reefs and shoals that extend for over 1500 miles across the central North Pacific Ocean from the "Big Island" of Hawaii to midway and Kure Atolls. The eight main islands of Hawaiian Archipelago include Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Nihau and Kahoolawe (listed in order of size) which extend for only 350 miles at the south-eastern end of the volcanic mountain chain. Hawaii includes some of the earth’s largest mountains, rising from oceanic depths of greater than 18,000 feet to a height above sea level of nearly 14,000 feet. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island are volcanic mountains with a total relief of 32,000 feet. The entire Island of Hawaii, with its five large volcanoes of Kahala, Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and kilauea, and Loihi, is less than 450,000 years old. Chapter 9 begins with the analogy of the cart. The cart has 4 wheels: Pre-Service Training, In-Service Training, Curricular Position and Teaching Materials and Gersmehl goes into more detail later in the chapter. The analogy, as a whole, says that the educational support car needs all 4 wheels to run.
