Nowadays, being gay is everywhere. It seems like a trip to the supermarket is never complete without a magazine or commercial on the radio advertising gay pride. It seems like the most effective of these trials has to be the hit television show Glee. Many of the shows episodes revolve on the aspect be yourself, whether you are gay, straight, handicapped, or popular. But only one of these has caught the eye of the American public. Gay pride, is it possible to have been born this way? If people can be born this way, what is the proof?
According to Jeffrey Satinover, MD, there is no evidence that shows homosexuality is genetic. Stating “homosexuality may run in families but you get viruses from your parents too, and some bad habits…” (Top 10 Pros). Brian S. Mustanski, PhD, agrees that though there may be no ‘gay’ gene, multiple genes potentially interacting with the environment could explain sexual orientation. Ex- gays are living proof that homosexuality is not fixed permanently. Therefore, for someone to be born gay, obviously that person would not be able to change ones sexual preference.
At one point homosexuality was considered to be a psychological disorder. Although the American Psychological Association states, “When researchers examined data about these people who were not in therapy, the idea that homosexuality was a mental illness was quickly found to be untrue.” According to Rita Mae Brown, speech, 28 August 1982, “No government has the right to tell its citizens when or whom to love. The only queer people are those who don't love anybody (Quotes on Homosexuality).” Kathleen Melonakos, founder of Delaware Family Foundation, wants to know how it’s not considered a mental disorder. Considering that homosexuality involves a life threatening behavior with an addictive component which has serious health implications. “That word "lesbian" sounds like a disease. And straight men know because they're sure that they're the cure,” Denise McCanles (Quotes on Homosexuality).
Though many researchers will agree that homosexuality is not genetic, still, others beg to differ. HRC.org published an article entitled “Guide to Coming Out,” the article states ‘sexuality and gender identity are not choices any more than being left-handed or having brown eyes or being heterosexual are choices…The choice is in deciding how to live your life.’ With society always shoving their view into the minds of Americans second of everyday, it is not that hard to see where the confusion arises.

The Problematic Hunt for a Gay Gene Essay - A genetic study that has concerned many people is the search for the ‘gay gene’. The finding of this gene began in the 90’s and is still in question to whether the gene exists and if it truly influences sexual orientation. Several studies have been completed that look into sexual orientation through behavioral and molecular genetics. Most of these studies, however, have failed to be replicated and they bring about ethical issues. Simon LeVay, a neuroscientist who studied brain functions and sexual orientation (Wikipedia contributors, 2014), published an article, “A Difference in Hypothalamic Structure Between Heterosexual and Homosexual Men,” in 1991, that suggested a biological reasoning to...   [tags: legal issues, homophobic]

How the Media has Influenced People's Thoughts on homosexuality Essay - ... From the 1940s to the 1960s there were several critically acclaimed news publications like the Time, Life, and Newsweek all published articles negatively portraying homosexuals. They used sources such as officials from the military, government, and law enforcement. By doing so, these publications were able to sway their readers to view those who were gay as mentally disturbed. A new media supported concept then developed years later that proposed the option of a genetic cause for homosexual behavior in which they called the gay gene....   [tags: viewpoints, LBGT. gay gene] 1399 words

Americans' Acceptance of Homosexuality Essay - ... In this particular case study, they were all raised as girls and kept in the dark regarding their gender transferring surgery. If being homosexual was solely culturally induced these people who have always known themselves to be women, would follow the cultural binds of society and be attracted to men. However that’s not the case, Reiner found that the faux females ended up being attracted to other women. Is Homosexuality a Choice? Essay - ... Religious perspectives, genetics, hormones, or life itself may or may not have an influence on homosexuality. Leviticus 20:13 reads as follows, “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their blood guiltiness is upon them.” 1 Timothy 1: 9-10 says “realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound...   [tags: gay gene, prejudice, religion] 788 words

Homosexuals are Not Born Gay Essay - If a young boy has a feminine throw he may be homosexual. Also if he has a soft or high voice this would be another detection that one would be homosexual. There have been many conclusions and statements as to what causes homosexuality. These are the traits that normally are classed with someone who is homosexual. The popular argument in today’s society is that homosexuality is something that is inborn, genetically linked to an enlarged gland in the brain or due to a particular chromosome. This would prove that it is natural, and that it is luck of the draw whether one is homosexual....   [tags: Gay Lesbian Homosexual Papers] 1371 words

It is sudden that in the quest for equal marriage rights, the gay rights activists happen to be few as they work their way out to the constitution. But their struggle is being supported by the public and bearing in mind that the political shift is also working to their advantage (Newton, 69-70). Jeffrey Satinover, MD, Founder and former director of the Sterling Institute for Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Medicine says, "Homosexuality may run in families but you get viruses from your parents, too, and some bad habits. Not everything that is familial is innate or genetic.
When it comes to being born ‘gay,’ many churches have their fair say. According to Walter Wink, Professor of Biblical Interpretation at Auburn Theological Seminary, the bible clearly condemns homosexuality. Wink also states that the real issue behind it is whether or not the biblical judgment is correct. While The Catholic Medical Association reports that sexual orientation is treatable and about “30% of those who seek ‘ex-gay’ therapy experience a ‘freedom of symptoms’ while 30% experience ‘Improvement’.” “My lesbianism is an act of Christian charity. All those women out there praying for a man, and I'm giving them my share, Rita Mae Brown (Quotes on Homosexuality).”
So if there is a ‘gay’ gene, why is it a crime to love someone of the same sex? “There is nothing wrong with going to bed with someone of your own sex. People should be very free with sex, they should draw the line at goats,” Elton John (Quotes on Homosexuality). At what point is the line drawn to whether or not love can be found anywhere? Mustanski believes that genes play an important part as to whether someone turns out to be gay or not. Though Satinover will argue all day and night that the environment is the real reason behind how a person turns out, maybe both ideas play a part together.
William Byne, MD, PhD, Director of the laboratory of neuroanatomy and Morphometrics at Mount Sinal School of Medicine, believes “the term “homosexual gene” is, therefore, without meaning, useless one proposes that a particular gene, perhaps through a hormonal mechanism, organizes the brain specifically to support a homosexual orientation.” Testing the reality of whether it is a choice to be gay or straight is definitely been put on the board. In many cases there have been gay men switch their game and become straight. These ‘ex-gays’ are the only non-biblical evidence that a gay gene does not exist.
Due to a lacking proof that the ‘gay’ gene can neither exist nor seize to exist, the argument will probably go on for many more years to come. Though everyone will voice their very own opinion on the matter, evidence is needed in order to truly convince the world around them. “To hear two American men congratulating each other on being heterosexual is one of the most chilling experiences - and unique to the United States. You don't hear two Italians sitting around complimenting each other because they actually like to go to bed with women. The American is hysterical about his manhood,” Gore Vidal (Quotes on Homosexuality).
