Forming the western division of the State the entire Garo Hills have an area of approximately 8,000 sq kms. Is thickly forested and hence one of the richest spots in bio-diversity.
The Garos mostly inhabiting the three districts of the State namely East Garo Hill, West Garo hill and South Garo Hill are essentially unreasonable, believe in spirits and have rich habitual tales of myths and legends. To the Garos the whole thing that is motivating and not natural has to have the tradition of some kind.
Tura
Location: West Garo Hills District
Tura the headquarter of West Garo Hills, which was also the headquarter of collective Garo Hills before two more districts of East and South Garo Hills were shaped, is 323 kms. from Shillong via Guwahati named after a current goddess Durama-Imbama, this Tura town is located at the foot of Tura reach your peak. 5kms high at 1400m the peak offer a number of of the optimum views of the hills against a backdrop of low-lying plains and far-reaching curve of the massive Brahmaputra.
Tura Peak
Location: West Garo Hills District
A gorgeous and extraordinary hill stands on the eastern side of Tura at a height of 872 m above sea level fail to notice the town of Tura. Local myth has it that the peak provides a sacred protection or residence to the ‘Gods’ and it is also claim that Tura was normally known as Dura, but due to mispronunciation by the British gave it the there name of Tura. The Tura assortment has been affirmed a reserve forest with an observatory, a Cinchona farm and a tourist bungalow positioned at its surrounding area.
