One thing a successful company has is a great staff filled with people in working in different areas, all doing their best to keep the business moving forward. Like an army, the staff does need a leader, or maybe a few, to make sure that everyone in the business is organized, informed and all moving toward the goal of the company. Some people may think that this person is the owner but most of the time this person is the manager. Successful managers must know, and be able to apply the four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, to their daily work routine.
Planning is specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate action needed to achieve those goals (Bateman & Snell, 2007). All businesses, new and established, must have goals. Having a plan is crucial because it lets everyone know exactly which goals the company is heading for. Plans help to make sure everyone in the staff knows what specific tasks they may have to do in order for the company, as a whole, to achieve the goal. Planning activities can include, analyzing current situation, anticipating the future, determining objectives, deciding what kind of activities the company will engage, choosing business and corporate strategies, and determining the resources needed to achieve the organization’s goals (Bateman & Snell). After a plan is set for a specific goal, now the organizing of resources is the next step.
Organizing is assembling and coordinating the human, financial, physical, informational, and other resources needed to achieve goals (Bateman & Snell, 2007). Organization is key because a well organize staff will be more efficient in executing the plans of the company. Lets say your company manufactures f...

Managers must always remember that the success of the business is important because if the business fails then they fail. Practicing the four concepts of management is crucial to the success of the business as well as that of the manager. Having a plan, being organized and a good leader is important, however, unexpected things might happen and a manager must be able to take control of the situation in order to achieve the company’s goal.

Organizing is defined as the assembling and coordinating the human, financial, physical, informational, and other resources needed to achieve goals (Bateman & Snell, 2004). The aspect I want to first discuss is how knowledge plays a big role in the organizing function of management in my organization. This is extremely important for organizing an organization because management has to obtain as much knowledge as possible. Here is a quote I will share that I have in my office from management “To know that we know what we know, and that we do not know what we do not know, that is true knowledge" (Thoreau, n.d.). They have to know about their plans for the future, their employees, competitor’s plans, changes in their market, and what to expect from the customer. They also have to try and plan for the unexpected things that happen to an organization. My organization starts the knowledge process by attending a convention called Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). It is a meeting of medical device organizations and customers who are there to preview and review existing and new products. It gives my organization a chance to know what is out there presently and what is on the horizon for our competitors. Baxter Healthcare uses this convention as a steeping stone for planning in the future. They will involve a large amount of management to go around to the different booths of other companies and find out what their products are all about. That gives the organization an idea of what we are up against and what we have to plan ahead for. It is here were organizing comes into play with management for gaining all the knowledge possible to achieve maximum success. It is also a very important function for management to organize ...
A great manager may not be a great leader. Great leaders must be able to communicate as well as motivate employees. “The manager administers; the leader innovates. The manager imitates; the leader initiates” (Bennis, 1994). Jon Katzenbach best described leadership “as a mind set of adaptive responsiveness” (Gale, 2002, p.2). Some will argue that leaders are born, while others will say leaders are trained. In either case, a qualified well-rounded leader must be found.

Organization is the function of assembling and coordinating human, financial, physical, informational and other resources needed to achieve goals. Without this function, my business would have folded in the first week. I have midlevel managers to gather together my employees, and discuss the plans for the week. Specific shoe styles must be displayed and organized in a certain order. Information must be disseminated to our marketing team so they know who we are targeting and what steps to take to increase our visibility and productivity. Organizing is not something just one person can do alone. For this function to work, it will take the entire team to pull together for us to triumphant.
Leadership and management are vital to the success of any organization. Leadership is necessary for the vision and inception while management is necessary for the operation and maintenance of the organization (Bruno, 2009). While leadership is a process involving influence to help a group of individuals to accomplish a common goal, management is more of a reaction to a need for organization, consistency, or correcting problems that is task-oriented and involves the use of authority (Ricketts, 2009). Management is sometimes a necessary component of leadership, particularly when problems arise in relationships, action must be taken to gain supporters and bring change about, or to create balance between the desires of organization members and the good of the organization (Plachy, 2009). Effective leaders realize possibilities and the need for change, motivate and inspire others, build trust, listen to others, design responsibilities to engage others’ values and abilities (Maccoby, 2000). Effective managers put systems in place to ensure smooth operation of the organization, take corrective actions, develop a hierarchy of authority, develop expectations, prepare and follow through on reshaping, and refine operations (Bruno, 2009).
The success of a company all falls on the shoulders of good management. If you have great management the company will run very smoothly. There are so many things that take place when you have good management. It encourages initiative, encourages innovation, helps with growth and expansion, improves the life of workers, motivates employees and much more. Without good management there would be no success.
in the similar manner, Hill, & McShane, (2008), argued that managers remain the most important asset of the business that drives the business towards path of development and growth. Additionally, the importance of managers, their roles and functions cannot be neglected. As the business environment has become highly competitive with market segments highly fragmented forcing business entities to adopt and integrate effective business practices that can ensure that the business is heading towards the path of competitive advantage. In this regard, it is realized that the role and function of manager has become highly indispensable. The early theory of management, as per stated by Need, (2006), argues that the core functions of manager are to Plan, Organize, Staffing, Leading, and Controlling. Augier, & Teece, (2009), within this regard stated that effective and efficient managers do not just go and perform haphazardly, in fact, good and effective managers discover their strengths, ensure they are making the most out of the existing resources and mastering the above mentioned five basic functions. The overall role of manager is highly significant, mainly because of the fact that manager while performing these five functions guide the entire business and
Planning is a way to respond to the changes occurring in the environment around a person systematically. Planning is an approach towards the problem solving rationally. It can be taken as a remedial tool for creating change in the current situation in systematic and efficient way.
“Planning: is specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions needed to achieve those goals” (Bateman & Snell, 2004, p. 16).
The first function of management is planning. Planning is a process that managers use to identify and involve goal setting and decide the best way to achieve the goal.(Bartol 2007) Planning connect the gap between where we do, where we intend to go. It predict the possible things to happen which would not otherwise happen (MSG 2012). There are several steps to the planning process, which are determine the goals of the organisation, evaluate the current position, consider possible future conditions, identify possible alternative actions and choose the best. Planning is the criteria thinking through goals and making decision to achieve the goal of the organisation’s objective, which requires a systematic way. Also objectives focus the managers how to achieve the final result as managers have to predict anything will happen, avoid the problem and fight back to competitors. An example of planning, which is the President Canon Inc Tsuneji Uchida and lead Canon Company become the no.1 in the global business (Canon.Inc 2011). Tsuneji Uchida has to understand what is the company objective and goal. First, make decision to protect the position and the aim of canon, improve the operation more diversity. Second, he creates the new design of camera and new technology, he plan to do these things to maximise profit.
An organisation is a deliberate arrangement of team consisting different personal identities to accomplish some specific goals and managers are the ones who hold the responsibility of mastering and placing them together to strive for that purpose (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg, and Coulter, 2008). Robbins et al. (2008) have stated that managers are people who coordinate and oversee the work activities of others so that the goal is accomplished effectively and efficiently. Managers usually possess qualities such as having strong communication skills, flexibility, imagination, enthusiasm, problem solving skills, and of course the desire to be a great leader (Phdinmanagement.org, 2014). The structure of management conducted by a manager is often influenced by the four functions introduced by Henri Fayol (planning, organising, leading, controlling); how Henry Mintzberg’s management roles play in the organisation and also the three essentials management skills proposed by Robert L. Katz (Robbins et al., 2008).
Management is not just about making decisions, watching over employees, and bossing others around. Good management result is satisfied customers, who provide better customer service. In order for new managers to be successful they need to be about to have good communication, human skills, and ability to motivate others. The ability to do these skills effectively makes a big difference in a manager and the company’s overall success. Companies depend on managers to fulfill skills and knowledge to help their company excel. The knowledge managers need to possess is technological inclined and globalization. Effective management can enhance a company’s performance by contributing to employees and customer satisfaction, productivity, development (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2010).
As Schermerhorn states in Management planning, organizing, leading, and controlling are the tools needed by managers to accomplish performance goals. It is crucial that managers be able to recognize and act upon problems or opportunities as they arise. Planning is perhaps the cornerstone of the four processes. All good processes were at some point given great detail so as to anticipate possible problems and solutions to those problems. When the Honda Motor Company decided it needed to refine its inventory they didn't just jump at the first idea that was proposed; they first set their objectives and discussed ways to meet those objectives. After giving careful consideration to processes and the streamlining of those processes human error rose as the top need for change. Sounds simple you might respond; in reality it is much more complicated.
Successful business leaders have stressed that good management skills, whether in a large corporation or in a one-person business, are vital to the success of a business. Many small business people may be good at launching their venture, but weak in managing the development and later stages of the business. DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES BETWEEN A MANAGER AND A LEADER Leadership is just one of the many assets a successful manager must possess. Care must be taken in distinguishing between the two concepts. The main aim of a manager is to maximise the output of the organisation through administrative implementation.
