In the United States we face many issues such as poverty, death, health, and many others. But the issue that is currently effecting society the most is foreclosure. What is foreclosure? How has it effected society?. The definition of foreclosure is a legal or professional proceeding held by a lien holder which is a court order termination of equitable right of redemption amongst housing properties. Foreclosure has not just effected us financially, but has effected society physically. Statistics shows that due to foreclosure murder rates, homelessness, and vacant properties has increased dramatically this year alone. The financial crisis is affecting the health of the economy and is fueling in recession.. This has created much problems for those that are middle class workers and low income families. It target those groups of individuals because their financial background is not up to par to be financially stabled, which later cause them to be behind in payments and things of that nature. Statistics also shows that millions of Americans spend an unexplainable amount of share on their income. More than 30 percent on housing and persistent inequality in housing and employment opportunities has gone down. That has created a significant lower homeownership rate for African -Americans and Latino families. Many people believe that the mortgage rates in America is threating the confidence of homeownership. I strongly believe that statement is true because seeing what foreclosure has done to Americas economy it tends to drain and disrupts a person state of mind of striving and going for what they want. It mentally crushes them which later leads to sorrow and sadness emotionally. I also feel that these plans can be a major part in developing a better economy and society for the “slum” and middle class communities. It will uplift many neighborhoods and people and to show that we can do something about this problem. Instead of us sitting and looking at the problem getting worse, we have to attend to the problem at hand. This issue has effected many families in many different ways. We have to take control of this situation before its gets out of hand. So again I believe that the plans such as those I explained should be looked over by the government and should be passed on. I am positive that it can help make a dramatic change in our economy and can develop a more secure and comfortable society in which the people of America live in.
As stated in the article, these three principles are: “mount programs on a scale equal to the dimension of the problem, aim these programs for high impact in the immediate future in order to close the gap between promise and performance and to undertake new initiatives and experiments that can change the system of failure and frustration that now dominates the ghetto and weakens our society.” Of course, no American can escape the consequences of the continuing decay of our county. However, the commission believed that is in the best interest of everyone that we work together to hackle this issue so we can come together as an unsegregated and nonviolent nation.

Since poverty affects a wide array of people, poverty has evolved into a very complex issue. And even though the government has passed legislature to try to ameliorate the situation, many of these means-tested measures like food stamps, have only been able to help the surface of poverty and fails to rip out the long roots poverty has grown throughout history. Poverty’s deep effects are seen especially in minorities as they struggle much more to leave a current situation that has been created by historical process. Even though government assistance like food stamps do help alleviate some of poverty’s burden, these measures fail to recognize the reality that many of the impoverished minority have undervalued homes or no homes at all and even if they can rent, that rent can be high enough to take up more than fifty-percent of their paychecks. Overall, poverty in America is a vastly complicated issue rooted throughout history. And even though the government has attempted to pass legislature to help provide relief from poverty, America still has yet to provide measures that target the roots of poverty and until then, the government assistance it does provide will only be superficial and fail to provide long-term solutions to a complicated

Obama Administration proposed what is called Comprehensive Immigration Reform. It is composed of six sections aimed at fixing the current immigration system. It includes enhanced border enforcement, interior enforcement and the most controversial section; an amnesty program to legalize undocumented immigrants. In other words, it creates a pathway to citizenship for unauthorized immigrants that is fair and feasible. Many argue that even though Comprehensive Immigration Reform is good for America because it addresses important issues like creating a committee to adopt the number of visas available to changing economic times, preventing people from working without permits and creating programs aimed at helping immigrants adjust to life in America. Yet it rewards violators of current U.S. laws who entered the country illegally, and those who entered the country legally but overstayed their visas. Opponents of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform proposal claim that immigrants have a negative impact on the economy; overwhelming social services of many states, and posing a threat to American workers as a result of big corporations exploiting immigrants with low wages and poor working conditions. With the recent economic downturn and the severe recession that hit the U.S, many individuals blame immigrants for their economic misfortune and lack of employment. For both the opponents and proponents of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Proposal, for the millions of the undocumented immigrants and their families, and lawmakers; immigration has become an emotional political issue. Despite the resistance of many, America should embrace comprehensive immigration reform.

It can be argued that the economic hardships of the great recession began when interest rates were lowered by the Federal Reserve. This caused a bubble in the housing market. Housing prices plummeted, home prices plummeted, then thousands of borrowers could no longer afford to pay on their loans (Koba, 2011). The bubble forced banks to give out homes loans with unreasonably high risk rates. The response of the banks caused a decline in the amount of houses purchased and “a crisis involving mortgage loans and the financial securities built on them” (McConnell, 2012 p.479). The effect on the economy was catastrophic and caused a “pandemic” of foreclosures that effected tens of thousands home owners across the U.S. (Scaliger, 2013). The debt burden eventually became unsustainable and the U.S. crisis deepened as the long-term effect on bank loans would affect not only the housing market, but also the job market.
Between January 2008 and February 2010, employment fell by 8.8 million, the largest decline in American history. The 2008 Recession, which officially lasted from December 2007 to June 2009, began with the bursting of an 8 trillion dollar housing bubble. Job losses during the recession meant that family incomes dropped, poverty rose, and people all over the country were suffering. Things like this don’t just happen. Policy changes incorporated with the economy are often a major factor. In this case, all roads lead to one major problem: Deregulation. Deregulation originating from the Carter and Regan Administrations, combined with a decrease in consumer spending, and the subprime mortgage bubble all led up to the major recession of 2008.
Foreclosure is defined as “The legal process by which an owner's right to a property is terminated, usually due to default” and it “typically involves a forced sale of the property at public auction, with the proceeds being applied to the mortgage debt.” (Foreclosure 1). Ultimately, it begins when the owner of a home is unable to make the required mortgage payments every month, therefore the homeowner falls in to default. The borrower receives a notice of default which warns that legal action will be taken soon. In most cases, one may not know what to do, and the only “solution” available may be to walk away, or let the bank take the home. Foreclosure was at it’s highest during the summer, with “one in every 355 U.S. Housing units” receiving a foreclosure filing in July. Therefore, the supply of housing that is affordable and accessible to low income people should be increased. Plus assistance that allows people to reach adequate stability should be regarded as a good investment in a productive society, in order to attain our objective. First we could start by introducing more productive assistance programs that actually focus on helping those in need of housing assistance. These programs will analyze how long people are homeless, what are their needs, the causes of homelessness, and in all how many are currently without a home. Subsequently, the City of Austin would begin building affordable housing according to the amount necessary.

The problem however, with these “renewal projects” is that the implemented changes are never usually intended to benefit the long time inhabitants of these communities, these changes are intended usually, to push out the element of poverty that exists in many of these communities (which is a direct result of decades of neglect) in exchange for the opportunity to cater to a more affluent (usually less “ethnic”) demographic. I remember the morning my mom told me that we would no longer be living in the only home I had ever known; it was right before spring break of my fifth grade year. My mom was a single parent, and had been for as long as I could remember. She was always strong, always a hard worker, always able to persevere; but the odds were against her. At first, I saw the words for sale and not long after the word foreclosure. She was a single, Hispanic woman earning no more than minimum wage in a grocery market, with no green card, and unable to speak English fluently. The change in our society from having rich, middle, and poor economic statuses has caused our society to crumble. The increase of low waged workers has increased tremendously. The decline in wages cause parents to work 2-3 jobs just to make the bills, which in turn has caused parents and children’s relationships to fail, which also in turn cause the children to have behavioral issues, which in turn cause violence rates to increase. Every time you turn on the television, all you observe and hear about is violence in our world. Our society is crumbling out of control due to the low wage jobs and inequality of wages among workers and if not addressed and improved our future will not survive.
