I have an delicious fondness for food and cuisine. In fact, everyone has their own unique favorite foods and drinks. There are variety of different types of foods that contain meat, vegetables, sea food and we’ve always coming up with new ideas to cook and prepare the food that we consume on a daily basis. In the article, “The Universal Diet”, the article discusses the fact that people eat in many developed countries, especially the U.S, detrimental to your health. I DISAGREE that the food consumed is unhealthy because the food that I’ve consumed is fresh, healthy and shaped me who I was, yet we have so many choices to eat healthy food. According to the article, there are numerous healthy, simple, and inexpensive diets from places like Japan, Italy, New Zealand, China and Greek. Since the 1940s, nutritionist have conducted the academic study in the dishes of the varying cultures to study which diet best assist people preserve their health. The Agrarian societies, for example, their society consumed foods that fit the guidelines of proper food table. They eat less meat because they couldn’t afford the price of meat. Another example, the Bushmen of Southern Africa, Bushmen were tribe people, they eat the same way as the early humans did over 2 million years ago. They are hunters, gatherers and never farm. As the economy increase in society, affluent folks switched their selection of their food. In wealthy country like Japan, people consume westernized food that contain high fats and they have high risk of developing heart disease. Bourgeoises in India eating rich diet have ugh risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. Americans consume lots of meat and food that are high fat. They ignore vegetables. they developed disease ... ... middle of paper ... ...people need to go out and figure out. But it is their choice that whether they wanted to eat healthy or not. We all love eating food. Every countries, cultures has their own unique traditional healthy food. Most of the foods that we eat has similarities but with different taste such as sweetness, spiciness, sourness, saltiness and so on. In developing countries, people tried to save their budgets by eating cheap and unhealthy foods. In longterm, this is cause consequences. I love eating vegetables and seafood because thats my favorites and they are healthy. I would also love to try new foods. We need to eat more vegetables, grains, seafoods, and some amount of meat. Doing exercise is also necessary. This will reduce the fats from the body and put back into regular body shape. Do not forget to choose right and healthy food to eat with love ones, friends and family.
With such a variety of options from every climate and location, it is hard to determine what to eat and even what you can eat, a problem not faced by species like the koala which eat one thing almost exclusively. Humans have benefitted from this in many ways as well. For one thing, we evolved larger brains and better cognitive ability in order to determine and remember what is safe to eat. Humans also have a complex sense of taste that allows us to determine what foods have a high energy content (sweet things) and what may be poisonous (disgusting or bitter things). Since humans began to cook, we have expanded our options by broadening the spectrum of edible things. Cooking opens the door to otherwise inedible substances because it breaks things down and often neutralizes toxins. This has only worsened the omnivore’s dilemma as it adds more options to what you can eat, thereby making the question of what you should eat harder to answer. Food culture and traditions such as those heavily present in countries like Italy and France solve this problem by creating guidelines to help navigate this issue. In Pollan’s eyes, America’s issue is that it lacks any sort of food culture because it is so young and is made up of a wide variety of people. As the Western world experiences increasing occurrences of certain diseases, society is focusing not only on finding the source of this phenomena but also on finding a solution to the problem. In his essay “Escape from the Western Diet”, Michael Pollan places the blame on the Western diet, arguing that people need only to change their eating habits in order to prevent many chronic diseases. While the author makes a compelling argument, his usage of logical fallacies, his questionable credibility, and his apparent bias weaken his point; nonetheless, I agree with his overall surmise that the western diet should be improved.
“Hungry for Change” is an eye opening documentary made to explore the role that food plays in peoples’ lives. The experts, ranging from authors to medical doctors, address a variety of claims through testimonials, experiments, and statistical evidence. They not only state the flaws in this generation’s diet but also logically explain the reasons behind the downfall in peoples’ diet and offer better ways to approach our health.
We Americans are always on the go, no matter if it is on our way to work, school, or exercise. Most people are eating some types of processed food usually for almost every meal due to how quick it is to prepare. In “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating” by, Mary Maxfield (pp.442-447), she affirms a bright argument about how food is not moral or immoral. Therefore, you can eat whatever you desire and not suffer any negative side effects, which she ignores. Her key points including stated facts such as “Culturally,we resist these scientific findings,” that people can be fat and healthy, “in favor of a perspective that considers fatness fatal and thinness immortal.”(pp.445) The main point to Maxfield’s claim in healthy eating, is being active and living a fit lifestyle. When we think of our national health we wonder why Americans end up obese, heart disease filled, and diabetic. Michael Pollan’s “ Escape from the Western Diet” suggest that everything we eat has been processed some food to the point where most of could not tell what went into what we ate. Pollan thinks that if America thought more about our “Western diets” of constantly modified foods and begin to shift away from it to a more home grown of mostly plant based diet it could create a more pleasing eating culture. He calls for us to “Eat food, Not too much, Mostly plants.” However, Mary Maxfield’s “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating”, argues differently she has the point of view that people simply eat in the wrong amounts. She recommends for others to “Trust yourself. Trust your body. Meet your needs.” The skewed perception of eating will cause you all kinds of health issues, while not eating at all and going skinny will mean that you will remain healthy rather than be anorexic. Nutrition and health have become more popular in today 's society. Our generation is becoming more and more indebted to the idea of being healthy and eating nutritious meals. However, in “The American Paradox,” by Michael Pollan he argues that our unhealthy population is preoccupied with nutrition and the idea of eating healthy than their actual health. He also mentions the food industry, nutrition science and how culture affects the way we eat and make food choices. While Pollan is right about all these factor that affect our eating habits, there is more to it than that. Convenience, affordability and social influence also affects our food choices making them inadequate.

Pollan also mentions the fact that livestock is being raised on a Western diet too, which means they are raised genetically too which means nothing is healthy like it used to be. In the human life, food procurement, preparation, and consumption have devoted to an art form.Spite the terms of “America has a food problem,” it shows that our nation is unable to produce and supply safe, nutritious food in a way where it sustains our global population. Eating is extremely important, it is also important to eat healthy. Most Americans eat without any concerns; they are not questioning or researching what they are feeding themselves or their family. A lot of that has to do with their financial stability, not having the time to prepare a meal due to their time-consuming work schedule, also lack of knowledge and education on what they are consuming. In this bibliography, I will go over all three articles and explain what they are about.
In this book, Pollan focuses a lot on the culture that surrounds the eating habits of today’s society in America. He talks about how we come from a culture that was primarily dependent on the hunting and gathering of our food. Pollan explains that through the years, Americans have turned away from providing for themselves in exchange for quicker and more convenient meals. I believe that America has evolved into a fast paced way of living. This has inhibited today’s society from having optimal time to prepare and even sit down to enjoy their meals. These cultural changes have led to a higher consumption rate of processed and fast foods. Almost anywhere you go, you can find a find a fast food restaurant or chain. With all of these arising opportunities, today’s culture has created a very unhealthy nation filled with sickness and disease. Pollan states that three out of every five Americans are overweight and one out of every five is obese. When compared to American culture before processed and fast food were ever an option, issues and diseases related to weight were almost non-existent. The people that lived before our modernized culture had to expend a greater amount of energy on hunting and tracking their prey, sometimes even ending up empty handed. However, when compared to today’s culture a surplus of food is available to people in exchange for much smaller energy expenditures.
The poor food choices that men and women make is the cause of many illnesses, disease and chronic health conditions. Men and women generally have different thoughts and choices on the topic of healthy food. People’s bad health may be genetically occurred or their exposure to their past nutritional education was not helpful, but their bad health is primarily based upon the poor choices that the individuals choose in daily life.
