“Hail to The Goodness and to the Supreme Compassionate Director, most true, most powerful, most benevolent...We exist to please him” (Levitin 3). To most, this statement seems like one set by a cruel dictator. However, in The Goodness Gene, a 253 page scientific-fiction novel, author Sonia Levitin creates a world where this creed is the basic “motto” of the world. The setting is located 300 years into the future, where a man by the name of Hayli (who is referred to by the world as the Supreme Compassionate Director), has taken control of the world to make it a perfect environment. Hayli’s son, Will, is the main character who, after a trip outside of his isolated community, realizes that the world his “father” created was not really as perfect as it seemed, while also discovering why he was created. The title, The Goodness Gene, really symbolizes the clash of man and its society in the book. The phrase “The Goodness Gene” is directly related to Hayli’s plan for the society. At some point in their lifetime, a person obtains possession over a power they have not had once before. This single source could range anywhere from being able to choose a morning outfit to having three magical wishes. The power could come from within or an outside source, and how they use it determines what they perceive to world to be. From here, their morals become tested on whether to use this authority for selfish reasons or to do what is right. Good vs. evil dates back to the biblical literary figures, Adam and Eve, along with the “tree of bad and good” (Schachter 73). With many different versions of this encounter, the theme remains the same. In W.W. Jacobs’ short story “The Monkey’s Paw,” the narrator uses symbolism through parts of the setting, reiterating numbers, and objects that relate to biblical aspects as well as known morals.

Michael Sandel is a distinguished political philosopher and a professor at Harvard University. Sandel is best known for his best known for his critique of John Rawls's A Theory of Justice. While he is an acclaimed professor if government, he has also delved deeply into the ethics of biotechnology. At Harvard, Sandel has taught a course called "Ethics, Biotechnology, and the Future of Human Nature" and from 2002 to 2005 he served on the President’s Council on Bioethics (Harvard University Department of Government, 2013). In 2007, Sandel published his book, The Case Against Perfection: Ethics in the Age of Genetic Engineering, in which he explains unethical implications biotechnology has and may have in the near future regarding genetic engineering.
Life is a very valuable asset, but when lived on someone else’s terms its nothing but a compromise. The seemingly perfect image of Utopia which combines happiness and honesty with purity, very often leads in forming a dystopian environment. The shrewd discrepancy of Utopia is presented in both the novel ‘The Giver’ by Lois Lowry and the film ‘The Truman Show’ directed by Peter Weir. Both stories depict a perfect community, perfect people, perfect life, perfect world, and a perfect lie. These perfect worlds may appear to shield its inhabitants from evil and on the other hand appear to give individuals no rights of their own. By comparing and contrasting the novel ‘The Giver’ and the film ‘The Truman Show’, it can be derived that both the main characters become anti-utopian to expose the seedy underbelly of their Utopian environment which constructs a delusional image of reality, seizes the pleasures in their lives and portrays a loss of freedom.
Society, individuals, and governments all have their own definition of good. They vary a little, but they are still followed. However, when the definition of good is manipulated to fit someone’s own character, it loses its meaning. In the narrative, A Good Man is Hard to Find, the narrator creates a new definition of good; however, so do the characters. Eventually, the antagonist’s definition of good, which is just her values, along with her egotistical and manipulative nature, results in her downfall; the author employs biblical allusion and a series of plot twists to emphasize these tragic flaws.

In Joelle Charbonneau’s novel, The Testing, the balance is shifted when Cia Vale and Tomas Endress’ love, overpowers all evil thrown at them by an inhumane government. The Testing is a series of brutal physical and mental challenges. These evil tests are not done for power nor riches, but for a mere chance at a university education. As Theodore Roosevelt once said, “…there is no effort without error and shortcoming;” and having read Brené Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection and Daring Greatly, I wholeheartedly agree with that statement, and Brown’s decision to include it in her book. I chose to read Daring Greatly because I love Brown’s witty remarks and humor, also because it seemed like a book I might actually take something away from, and I was not wrong. I have never been the type of person to read self-help books, but Brown has made me a firm believer through both The Gifts of Imperfection and Daring Greatly, and I do not think you can truly reflect on one without also reflecting on the other. When viewing the atrocities of today's world on television, the starving children, the wars, the injustices, one cannot help but think that evil is rampant in this day and age. However, people in society must be aware that evil is not an external force embodied in a society but resides within each person. Man has both good qualities and faults. He must come to control these faults in order to be a good person. In the novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding deals with this same evil which exists in all of his characters. With his mastery of such literary tools as structure, syntax, diction and imagery, The author creates a cheerless, sardonic tone to convey his own views of the nature of man and man’s role within society.
The story of Adam and Eve has been told for many generations. One of its main focuses is the power of temptation in a Utopian society. In this Genesis, man’s disobedience to G-d has shown the world that people will always challenge authority and laws were meant to be broken. In We, by Yevgeny Zamyatin, and Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, the societies in both texts resemble the characters in Genesis by either characteristics or by the actual role that they play in (their) society. The one recurring theme within all three texts told by either G-d in Adam and Eve, Big Brother in Nineteen eighty-four, or the Benefactor in We, was that they cannot have both freedom and happiness. Characters in both stories broke authority’s rules and had to be punished. This proves that humans are always selfish and look for different alternatives in order to live in a perfect world. These character relationships with authorities and one another connect very similarly with the story of Adam and Eve. These stories show us that the world is indeed imperfect, and that authority will punish those who rebel, sin or revolt.
