Many college students depend on grants from the government to pay for their college education. Unfortunately, now more than ever, students are going to depend on those grants, because the Arizona Board of Regents has approved the raise of tuition at ASU, U of A, and NAU. The meeting for this approval took place on April 4, 2013. Regents gathered, and after the vote took place, the choice to spike up tuition was made. The incoming students at Arizona’s three major universities face a tuition rise of 3-5%; depending on which university they will attend (Associated Press). University students are not alone; students who attend any of the Maricopa Community Colleges will also deal with higher tuition, due to the lack of state funding. Many will blame the regents for making such an insensitive decision; however, they did what was best for the colleges. Regardless of the state cutting funds to the colleges, the schools still need those dollars for their facilities and programs. It is a necessary step that is needed for the schools to function properly. Increases to tuition rates for Arizona’s university and community college may cause burdens, but there are multiple benefits that are often overlooked.
One of the burdens for students will be the extra fee they will pay towards tuition.
NAU is facing the largest increase with a 5% incline to tuition rates (Medeiros). While students at U of A are looking at an extra $356 dollars to their tuition, racking their semester fees up to $10,391 (Alaimo). The tuition increase has also caused ASU to reach the $10,000 range for its students (Medeiros). Since the schools would normally receive more funding from the state, extra charges are be added to make up the slack. While it might c...

Tuition is the cost to take classes at a college or university and is the most expensive part of a college education as it makes up 60 % of the overall price tag (Bashkar and Gopalan). Tuition has become increasingly more expensive over the years and has increased by nearly 500% since 1986, which is far more than inflation or tuition (Willie). The question is, why has there been such a mas...

Since the 1980’s the cost of attending colleges have increased rapidly. Rising costs of for Medicare, highways and prisons have caused many states to reduce a percentage of their budget for higher education. Colleges and Universities currently face a very serious challenge:
The skyrocketing price of college tuition is causing a tremendous concern over whether higher education will be a viable financial concept to the average citizen over the next decades. Some families have opted to explore different means of obtaining a higher education for their children as these costs escalate. There is overwhelming evidence that colleges need to restructure the way they are run because tuition prices are increasing at a rapid rate causing changes in the way students fund their education and in the way the government provides educational subsidies.
Having the college experience is everyone’s dream, especially High School students who are ready to get out into the world and explore. College is very important for furthering someone’s career, but no one thinks about all the costs and the stress that comes along with college. Tuition fees and costs are increasing more and more each year. Now days it feels like you have to be a millionaire just to attend a good college and get a good degree in what you were attending for. There are some students that do not have a lot of money and live on very little things with their parents, but indeed are very smart and have a 4.0 GPA. Those students are the ones that are unable to attend college if they cannot afford it. College tuition is too expensive,
As The “Progress of Education Reform” suggests, tuition discounting is major contributor to the rising cost of college in the sense that while it provides a tuition discount to the one particular student receiving the grant or scholarship it places a heavier burden on the majority demographic that attends the university without such discounting. (The Progress of Education Reform” 1). In contrast to popular opinion, scholarships and grants which are normally regarded as blessings are ironically a contributing factor to rising tuition prices. Basically, the universities have to make up for the money they lost by awarding the scholarships so the majority of the student population who did not qualify feel it in their pocketbooks. A final cause of this ludicrous tuition spike is the shift in university budgets to cater to the administration departments of the schools. Jobs in this department are non-teaching jobs that provide student services ranging from student safety to counseling and wellness programs. These jobs are definitely
I conducted a survey to test how students feel about rising tuition prices. As a college student who is attending a public university with government assistant, I wanted to know how other college students felt about tuition prices increasing. I wanted to know if it makes them worried about how they will pay for college,if they worry about continuing their education, or if it makes them reconsider attending college if college was a goal for them.
Kantrowitz' study also found that "Complying with the increasing number of regulations, in particular, with the reporting requirements, adds to college costs," therefore contributing to a rise in tuition to pay for these additional costs. Since deregulation, the average cost of tuition and fees at the state’s public universities has increased by 90%, according to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Of the 181 members of the state’s 83rd Legislature, more than 50 have voted at least once to advance efforts to end tuition deregulation, while fewer than 20 have consistently voted to uphold it. Many have never voted on the issue, and more than 40 members are freshmen. This rise, however, is not entirely negative. Tuition increases help universities make up for that in their budgets.
The community consists of five schools; two elementary and three high school both public and charter schools. The oldest looking school within the community is Mary McLeod Bethune School consisting of broken down fences, dirt playground, and older looking buildings (www.googlemaps.com, 2016). The two elementary schools also house preschools for toddlers, Capitol Elementary and Mary McLeod School, with one additional day care, Star Bright Preschool located on a busy street within the community (www.googlemaps.com, 2016). Finally, for the older community member, Arizona State University has a downtown Phoenix campus within the neighboring zip code for those seeking continued education needs. The CHN can use these schools to host health fairs and immunization clinics for children as well as education about childhood safety; such as, seatbelt usage, car seats, bike helmets, and exercise and healthy eating

Over the last few decades, college tuitions and fees have increased by over one thousand percent, surpassing every category associated with the cost of living including food and medical. This unprecedented rise in cost has resulted in an avalanche of issues for young and middle-age adults. As, a result of steep student loan amounts, graduates are being forced to move back with their parents, fewer young people are becoming homeowners, they are delaying retirement saving, and are dropping out of college at an alarming rate of nearly fifty percent. With all the controversy surrounding the topic of increasing college cost, the revised income-driven repayment program has been created to help borrowers pay back student loans according to their income.
As colleges’ funds dry up, colleges must turn to the public to further support higher education. By raising state taxes, colleges can collect funds to help improve the school’s budgets. The state provides funds from the taxes for colleges to receive a certain amount for each student currently enrolled. All community and traditional four year colleges collect these funds in order to maintain the school’s budget. As reporter, Eric Kelderman states, “less than a third of colleges’ budget is based from state taxes”. The school’s budget is how colleges are able to provide academic support programs, an affordable intuition, and hire more counselors. Colleges must now depend on state taxes more than ever for public colleges. Without collecting more funds from state taxes, as author, Scott Carlson explains how Mr. Poshard explains to senators “our public universities are moving quickly toward becoming private universities…affordable only to those who have the economic wherewithal to them” (qtd. in.) Public colleges must be affordable to anyone who wishes to attend. If colleges lack to provide this to students, it can affect dropouts, a student’s ability focus, and cause stress. The problem of lack of funding is that colleges have insufficient funds. Therefore, the best possible solution for the problem of lack of funding would be increasing and collecting more funds from state taxes.
