Crime is a social evil which is prevalent all over the world. It is an illegal act for which an individual is punished by the government. Crime exists in various forms including murder, rape, abduction, drug trafficking, prostitution, sexual harassment, and many more. Everyday newspapers and news channels give us news about various crimes that take place in the world. This makes us wonder whether crimes are inseparable from our day-to-day life. With passing days and rapid urbanization, crime rates are increasing. Advancement of technology is also contributing to the increasing crime rates.

India is one of the countries of the world where crime rates are very high. It ranks tenth in the list of countries with highest crime rate. Last year 1,64,630 crimes were reported in India. But do you think this is the actual number? Many crimes in India are not reported. Some of the reasons for this are fear of indulging in court activities for a long time, financial status, fear of ignominy and many more. Some of the common crimes that take place in India are rape, murder, dowry, child marriage, female infanticides, prostitution, gang rape, black marketing, abduction and many others.

Crime against women is the most common in India. It includes sexual harassment, trafficking of women, rape, acid throwing, child marriage, dowry, domestic violence, female infanticides, etc. According to the country's National Crime Record Bureau, crimes against women have increased by 7.1 percent since 2010. The number of rapes reported has also risen. Nearly one in three rape victims in India is under the age of 18. One in 10 is under 14. Every 20 minutes in India, a woman is raped. Corruption takes place at higher levels as well. India was ranked 94th out of 177 countries on Global Corruption Perception Index 2013, which was released by Transparency International on 3 December 2013. Globally, 27% people say they paid bribe when accessing public services and institutions in the last 12 months. In India however, the number of people who did the same was 54% - over 1 in two citizens.

Cyber-crime is another form of crime that exists in India. It includes spam, cyber stalking, computer hacking, etc. Today, facebook is the biggest example of cyber-crime. Other crimes that take place in India are poaching and wildlife trafficking, arms trafficking and crime against foreigners.
