Before Spanish Explorers
Prior to the Spanish conquest, Colombia was inhabited by the Chibcha‘s, and Cariban people, but the first people to establish villages were the Mesoamericans. They arrived around 1200 B.C. They introduced the farming of fruits and vegetables. The main things they farmed were potatoes and corn. They also made finally crafted artifacts from gold, and stone, and sometimes made baskets from grass. They were followed by a second wave of Mesoamericans around 500 B.C. By the 1500’s the most advanced culture was the Chibchas.
These Indian groups relied on agriculture, fishing and salt mining to live. They also made clothing and blankets to trade with other tribes. And lived in little very well organized towns connected by stone walkways.

Spanish Colonization
The Invasion by the Spanish consisted of conquistadors, administrators, and clergymen from the Roman Catholic church. The first Spanish explorers to enter Colombian territory were Alonso de Ojeda in 1499 and Rodrigo de Bastidas in 1500. 1510 is when Ojeda found Acandí on the western side of the Gulf of Aruba. In 1538 Jiménez de Quesada found the city of Bogotá, which is currently the capitol and largest city. Traveling from Peru a man by the name of Belalcázar found and established the cities of Popayán and Santiago for Spain.

During Colonial Rule
The social hierarchy was based in three parts: at the top was the people of Spanish decent, then the mestizos, people who were Spanish and Indian mixed, and the lowest class was the native Indians. In the colonies the person in charge was the viceroy. Next jurisdiction was the audiencia, this contained judges and a president, and they controlled the cities.

Labor. The main thing
That helped Spanish economy was mining for precious metals, such as gold and copper. By the end of the 1700’s tobacco was one of the most exported goods from Colombia. The growth of agriculture was mainly due to the fact that a lot of the mineral and metal resources in Spain were starting to deploy.
The only religion permitted inside the colony was Roman Catholic. When the Spanish first came the clergymen forced all of the Indians to give up their gods and follow the Roman Catholic religion. Also they were forced to speak the Spanish language.

Struggle For Independence

Phillip V took up the throne in Spain he decided they were going to have more control in the colonies and demanded that a tribute from the Indians be paid to Spain.

These tribes were extremely smart people. They did not build out in the middle of nowhere by themselves. Many villages were created. This offered many properties to the cultural lifestyle of these tribes. When they found the “new world” is too weak to resist the invasion of European, they started to establish the colony in America. Bartolomé de Las Casas used to be a priest who explored America on Hispaniola and Cuba. But after he witnessed the colonists enslave and mistreat Indians, he changed his mind and start to protect the Indians. He free his Indian slaves in 1514, and start to against Spanish mistreat them (Foner, p.7). After that, he made the effort to liberate the Indian slaves, and he had backed to Spain several times want to make the King reduce the heavy labor of Indians. Finally, Spain published New Laws in 1542, which indicate that Indians no longer be enslaved (Foner, p.7).

Religion played an integral role in the development and culture of the Spanish, French, and British colonies and extended into their relations to Indians. While many settlers sincerely wanted to convert the Indians to Christianity, there were settlers who used religion as a tool to both control and civilize Indians. The Indians who were exposed to the practices of conversion had experienced both suffering and benefitting from their relations with colonists. Throughout the early history of the colonization of New World, witchcraft had also figured into the religious observations of the groups that had led groups of settlers into a state of hysteria and panic which was indirectly related to their relations with the Indians.

Looking back into history, at around the 1500s to the 1600s, people were very much the same in the sense that many countries were looking to aggrandize their economy and appear the greatest. It was this pride and thinking that motivated many of the superpowers of the world’s past. Two such monarchies in the European continent included England and Spain, which had at the time, the best fleets the world has ever seen. Because both were often striving to be the best, they conflicted with one another. Although England and Spain had their differences, they both had a thirst to see new things and it was this hunger that led them both to discovering different parts of the “New World” and thus, colonizing the Americas.
Many tactics of the Spanish were in an attempt to convert the Indians to Catholicism. There were peaceful and violent actions taken in regards to trying to convert the Indians. Many missionaries were sent with charters to the new land to try and bring the natives the Christian faith. Many missionaries didn’t know the language or rituals of the natives, so that made it hard for the monks to preach the divine word of God. In the year 1492, the Queen and King of Spain developed thoughts of strengthening their power and seeking new sources of wealth. This being stated, the Queen and King had agreed on financing Christopher Columbus’s expedition, hoping it would bring the kingdom wealth (Ellis 2004).
