Stop for a while; look at who are the people in the media industry that inspire you the most. Now look through you Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook. Who are those men and women you tag as your crush of the week. Are these celebrity pictures really how they look on a daily basic? Media has changed throughout the years and the technology used to edit pictures is sometimes taken to the extremes. With HD screens to camera lens that offer higher resolution; it’s easier to see the common pimples to the blemishes on people on TV screens. Not only that, but as new products are introduced into society; the culture around us changes. Not to talk about the propaganda methods used to launch these items. We have propaganda in magazines where women of a certain shape forms are the ones introducing these products. Weather you notice it or not all of these products, social media cites, and propaganda methods change society and what we consider the ideal/ beautiful body. Why does this happen though? Well, when we have new investigations like the one released by Ipsos Open Thinking Exchange (OTX) stating that “18-34-year-olds report spending 3.8 hours a day; 35-49-year-olds report spending 3 hours per day; and 50-64-year-olds report spending 2.4 hours per day. In terms of the gender difference, female social networkers spend almost 40% more time daily with social media sites than men (3.6 hours vs. 2.6 hours)” we can see that media is a big part of our culture and everything that is portrayed in media will affect society’s view points on what is acceptable and beautiful. From newspapers, magazines, television, movies, and the Internet, people are connected to the media in so many ways every day. Media plays a huge impact on daily life, telling the public what the newest trends are, events that are happening in day-to-day life, and scandalous stories of elite individuals involving politics, fame, and money. From young children to middle aged adults, people are constantly fixated on the images the media portrays for how they should look. “Body image is defined as “perceptions of and attitudes toward one’s own physical appearance” (Burlew & Shurts, 2013, p. 1). The media has an impact on how society and individuals view themselves and each other.

The United States is the biggest economical power in the world today, and consequently has also the strongest and largest media industry. Therefore, it is essential to take a look at the crucial relationship between the media and the popular culture within the social context of the United States for a better understanding of the issue. For a simpler analysis of the subject we shall divide the media industry into three main branches: Entertainment, News and Commercials (which is the essential device for the survival of the industry, and shall be considered in integration with Entertainment). The evolution of media, from old media to new media, has transformed the way we understand the world around us. New media is interactive and is user-generated while old media is a more traditional way of communicating through television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, etc (Lecture Notes. January 12, 2011). New media gives us a new perspective by allowing us to interact with one another through the Internet. Media has become much more personal and diverse as user-generated content becomes more prominent in our lives (Lecture Notes. January 24, 2011). We are exposed to various viewpoints shape our understanding and knowledge of the social world, but does the form of media actually affect the way we understand the content which is presented to us? For my paper, I will determine whether or not the medium is the message by analyzing two different types of media sources and how they affect our understanding of the content. For my old media source I have chosen a news clip from the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric that deals with the ongoing Egyptian uprising. For my new media source I have chosen a video blog, or ‘vlog’, by an Egyptian man named Omar who discusses the crisis in Egypt from a personal point of view. Both media sources deal with the same topic, but result in different understandings of the crisis.
Social Scientists say that the average American watches too much television and plays too many video games. I would agree with this, because in high school that is all I did, but not so much for me anymore. Back when I was in high school that is all I did. Watch television, play Nintendo, hang out with my friends. However, now that I am in college, I have had to change my ways. It helps a lot that I don't have either one of those in my dorms.
