"The crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away; but with Blood."-John Brown (Hickman, Kennedy). Best said by the last words of John Brown, the young United States was inevitably headed towards a serious war. There were many events, though, in the 1850’s that caused the war to arrive sooner than expected. The compromise of 1850, written by Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, had a large impact on slave owners and abolitionists alike. Now New Mexico, Utah, and any other new west land could decide for themselves whether they were free or slave according to popular sovereignty. Popular sovereignty is when people in their own state and the states government decide for themselves whether they are a free or slave state (Hickman, Kennedy). Also, because of this compromise residents in the District of Columbia could no longer trade slaves ("Civil War Events Leading to War Timeline"), Texas’ debts were canceled and some Texan land was given to New Mexico. There was another part to this compromise that was more pleasing to the pro-slavery citizens called the Fugitive Slave Act. The Fugitive Slave Act was part of a trade off. California joined the United States as a free state in 1850 so the slave states received The Fugitive Slave Act as their part of the trade off (Hickman, Kennedy). The Fugitive Slave Act made it easier for slave owners to track down their slaves if they escaped to free states ("Civil War Events Leading to War Timeline"). The Act made it more dangerous to help free slaves and hide them. Even if the house where the slaves were hid was in a free state, if the government found out, major fines or imprisoned could result for those hiding the slaves, as well as the slave would be forced to go back to the slave owner. ... ... middle of paper ... ...Civil War Events Leading to War Timeline." Originally thought of as a benefit to slaveholders, the act ended up hurting the Southern cause for slavery. The act not only allowed escaped slaves to be hunted in the North, but also required federal marshals to assist slave catchers. In spite of the fact that each section received and experienced many benefits, I think that the north seemed to gain the most from the Compromise of 1850. The equilibrium of the Senate was at the present time with the free states, in spite of the fact that California often voted with the south in regards to many issues in the 1850s. The major success for the purpose of the south was the Fugitive Slave Law. In the final analysis, the north refused to impose it. “Massachusetts even called for its nullification, stealing an argument from John C. Calhoun. Northerners claimed the law was unfair. The flagrant violation of the Fugitive Slave Law sets the scene for the tempest that emerged later in the decade.” Yet at this point in time, Americans anticipated that the fragile peace would succeed. In conclusion, the North got more advantages because California was admitted as a free state, minimizing the Southern on voting power in Congress. This is the reason why Northerns perceived that they should make a pro-Southern signal by accepting the new Fugitive Slave Act. It horribly rebounded them, evoking and arousing sympathy for oppressed

In 1849 once again the Union was facing the same crises it had faced in 1820. California now wanted to be admitted as a free state. Once again Henry Clay came up with a compromise to resolve this conflict. California would indeed be admitted as free while the rest of the Southwest territories would decide the slavery issue by popular sovereignty. It would also abolish slavery altogether in Washington DC and initiate a stronger fugitive slave law to appease the South. This last concession angered people in the North however. Free blacks were concerned as now a Southerner could accuse any black person as being a runaway slave.

The Compromise of 1850 brought relative calm to the nation. Though most blacks and abolitionists strongly opposed the Compromise, the majority of Americans embraced it, believing that it offered a final, workable solution to the slavery question. Most importantly, it saved the Union from the terrible split that many had feared. People were all too ready to leave the slavery controversy behind them and move on. But the feeling of relief that spread throughout the country would prove to be the calm before the storm.
Following the American Civil War, the whole nation was forever changed and was the result of many good and bad things. Although it was a very costly war and was So, the Civil War did define us and made us the good and the bad things we are and led to an extremely significant change because slavery was abolished once and for all and African American rights followed many years later, the Federal Government imposed more power over the states, our country was divided for a while, and it left the nation in debt due to the fact that we fought each other.
The Fugitive Slave Act was part of the Compromise of 1850. This act required that authorities in the North had to assist southern slave catchers to retrieve and return slaves to their owners. Southerners favored this act because they saw no slavery in the territories to the west, by the passing of the Fugitive Slave Act it would help preserve slavery in the south. This act allowed southern slave owners to get their slaves back when they escaped to the North that is why this act was important and critical to southern survival. The view of this act by the North was the opposite, especially from those who were black, they feared this act. The blacks in the North were terrified that this act would make it so they could be ushered back to the south even if they were innocent. This led to the creation of resistance groups in the North.
These events had helped keep the slavery issue alive. At first, there was the Compromise of 1850. This compromise made Texas give up its land. In return, Texas got 10 million dollars so it would be able to pay off its debts. The following quote states what had happened, “Slave trade would be abolished… although slavery would still be permitted” (“Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act”). Next, the Fugitive Slave Act was passed. It required everyone to help with fugitive slaves. According to the article “The Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act,” the Fugitive Slave Act made the subject of slavery come out more out into the
While the North consisted of Free States with slavery illegalized, the South heavily depended on slave labor. This caused numerous disagreements between the two sections of the country on whether slavery should be allowed to expand or not. With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the debate on whether the new states entering the Union should be allowed to come in as slave states. During that time the United States consisted of eleven free states and eleven slave states, which allowed equal representation of both sections in the government. The Compromise of 1820, also known as the Missouri Compromise, was created due to the tension that arose when Missouri applied for admission to the Union.

There were several issues that contributed to the split between the northern and southern states. Among these were the deep social, economic and political differences. The split could be traced as far back as the early 1800’s, just as the industrial revolution was beginning. It’s effects on the north and the south caused the economic split. As the north was becoming more industrialized; the south began to rely heavily on slave labor. This was one of the main reasons, as the southern view on slavery differed greatly from the North. These views were based on drastically different interpretations of the constitution.
Even when looking at the major events leading up to the civil war (3/5 and Missouri compromise, Kansas-Nebraska act, and the election of 1860), it is easy to see the beginnings of a war by a nation divided over slavery.
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was a debatable decision for the north and the south. A decision towards whether or not Missouri should come in as a slave state. In congress, those on the side of the north, found out that Missouri was going to be placed as a slave state and were dramatically upset. They were upset due to the fact that it would cause an unbalance. During the 1800’s there were an equivalent of eleven slave states and eleven free states. Naturally, ...
