Ethical Decision Making… Why Do We Need It?
To understand “ethical decision making” it is best to break the phrase up. What is the definition of ethics? According to the website businessdictionary.com (2011), ethics are “basic concepts and fundamental principles of right human conduct.” It stands to reason that ethical decision making is the ability to make decisions based on core or base principles of correct human conduct. We at Acme Toy Company depend on employees at all levels to make the “right” choices when it comes to business decisions and their own conduct. How do we support them in their ethical decision making?
1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this report is to provide Acme Toy Company with two strategies that we could implement to not only foster but to ensure that ethical decision making is happening at all levels of our company.
2. Strategy #1 for Ethical Decision Making -
Creation of Acme Toy Company Code of Ethics
2.1 Purpose
The Acme Code of Ethics would be an official company outline that would list conduct expectations not only at the company level but for all employees. The code of ethics will provide the scaffolding on which our business practices are built and ethical decision making is based.
2.2 Benefit
Acme toy Company would benefit from a code of ethics in the fact that it would guide and help with the understanding of acceptable conduct at all levels of the organization; It would be used for evaluation processes of, not only our employees, but our day to day operating business practices as well making sure that when we make decisions on behalf of the company they are in tune with company philosophy. We have the opportunity in our organization to not only facilitate, but to ensure this capability by implementing two strategies, the creation and of the Acme Code of Ethics document which will serve as a guide to all personnel and the creation of the position of Code of Ethics Compliance Manager. A person whose professional responsibility is to oversee that the codes of ethics are being adhered to by all employees, and that ethical decision making is being practiced at all levels of Acme Toy Company.

By proactively addressing ethical issues with a code of conduct, Raiders Inc. can set the standard regarding how they want employees to behave. Employee can be trained on the company code of ethics so they understand how their company expects them to respond. They can also train them on the biases of decision making, to make sure they are aware of the pitfalls that exist. (Robbins & Coulter, 2012)
Ethical decision-making is the responsibility of everyone, regardless of position or level within an organization. Interestingly, the importance of stressing employee awareness, improving decisions, and coming to an ethical resolution are the greatest benefits to most companies in today’s world (Weber, 2015).
Employees should be trained and familiar with the Code of Ethics and follow the lead of their referent managers when dealing with the customers of Paradigm Toys to ensure they are fulfilling their corporate social responsibility. Employees- The board of directors should make sure that their managers are training the employees on the Code of Ethics. Employees and managers should understand the importance and expectations that the board of directors requires of them to make sure they are performing ethically and maintaining the highest social responsibility.
On April 24th, 2014, one simple recording released by TMZ made Donald Sterling, owner of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers, the most hated man in America. In this recording, Sterling ranted over the fact how he did not want V. Stiviano, his partner, to be affiliated with any African Americans. As a result of his racist statements, fans, athletes, and sports organizations/members, voiced their opinions on the matter, flourishing social media. Many star players such as LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and a majority the Clippers players acknowledged that something had to be done, and that the NBA is no place for racism. Many organizations develop ethical codes to ensure employees and employers understand the difference in doing good or bad. In that respect, ethics are an essential aspect of successfully running of any organization or government. Ethics ensure employee’s productivity levels are up to the required standards. Ethics programs ensure satisfactory relationships with all stakeholders by aligning with all of their demands and needs, and determine conduct with customers and relationships with regulators, shareholders, suppliers, and employees (Ferrell, 2004). Values are a core set of beliefs and principles, one or many. A number of factors contribute to the development of values. These include membership in a community or culture, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.
Workplace ethics engages in judgements and collective agreements regarding a suitable guide of behaviour. The ethical decision making framework (EDM) presents, business decision is ethical or unethical.EDM provides an indication of traditional decision making process and issues that manipulate ethical decisions. Employees tend to fraud because they can experience the unfair treatments or situation that they face. Manages may ask employee to work long hours, and then they can take additional time off. Good performance leads to remunerations and appreciation managers than workers.
Code of ethics is to be utilized by AIHMA members, agencies, consumers, and others who choose to embrace it as a frame of reference. (AHIMA, 2014)

When it comes to business ethics in the workplace, Washington Mutual has designed what can be considered a well balanced workplace with behaviors that are aligned with their moral values and business ethics. Many times, unethical acts steam for behaviors that are socially or culturally acceptable within the organization. Ethical behavior can enhance a work environment and maximizes contentment, while unethical behavior may have the opposite affect. Not only can this behavior cause stress in the work place, there is the possibility of it ruining a business (Cross & Miller, 2012). Unlike corporate governance, ethical standards are not as easy to define. A code of ethics expresses fundamental principles and provides guidance to decision makers, but there are no set rules written into a code of ethics. Making good ethical decisions requires a trained sensitivity to ethical issues and a practiced method for exploring the ethical aspects of a decision and weighing the considerations that should impact our choice of a course of action. Having a method for ethical decision making is absolutely essential. When practiced regularly, the method becomes so familiar that we work through it automatically without consulting the specific steps.
Many people have different views of what ethical behavior is. Ethical behavior is defined as “Acting in ways consistent with what society and individuals typically think are good values.
