Standup for Kids is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1990 by Richard L. Koca who was inspired to begin outreach in 1987 when he saw a CBS broadcast of 48 hours documenting street kids in San Diego, California (StandUp For, 2014). He immediately began walking the streets of San Diego to identify homeless teens that he helped into shelters. His desire and passion to make a change in the lives of homeless youths led to the creation of the organization called StandUp for Kids. The mission of StandUp for Kids is “to empower teenagers toward lifelong personal growth through on the streets outreach programs.” This mission statement is clear and concise. It guides the actions of StandUp for Kids, spells out their overall goal and provides a path. StandUp for Kids strives to gain the trust of homeless youth in order to achieve its mission statement (StandUp For, 2014). This trust is sought out through programs such as street outreach where volunteers search for homeless youth who are in need of help. The homeless youth are then introduced to outreach centers where they are provided with food, basic supplies, counseling, educational assistance, independent living skills training and referral services for available programs throughout the community (StandUp For, 2014). The outreach centers also provide homeless youth with a safe place to stay. StandUp for Kids has elementary and middle school educational programs that teach these homeless youth students how to make decisions in difficult situations in order to encourage them not to run away (StandUp For, 2014). Moreover, this organization seeks to have a positive impact in helping homeless youth from community support. StandUP for Kids need an action strategy to emphasize an improvement of the procedure of the StandUp for Kids Facebook. This change will also include the creation of a StandUp for Kids Twitter page. Regularly updating these social media sites daily will create greater opportunities for audience engagement and feedback. Maybe this might lead to more awareness. One staff member (volunteer) should be designated to update the Facebook and Twitter site daily. Regularly updating these sites with interesting links and dialogue will increase the audience engagement, website traffic and awareness for StandUp for Kids. Also, this designated staff can engage the public through the use of and online blog. Links to the blog could be posted via Facebook and twitter.
