The second state I have chosen to write about is the beautiful state of Yucatan. It has been a pleasure living here and although Yucatan is considered to be part of Mexico it has developed as if it was its own country. Having so many different cultures influencing it you can see the European, American and Mexican influences in the food, architecture and History that Yucatan has. Yucatan has been in the middle of many great battles, diplomatic situations and conquest. It has been a privilege to see the Mayan, Spanish and Mexican influences collide with each other. I have seen how indigenous people still fight to preserve their language but understand that the world is evolving with or without them, which forces many to learn multiple languages. Yucatan is filled with a different amount of languages you have French, English, Spanish, Mayan and a whole bunch of many different languages mostly having to do with Having one of the seven wonders of the modern world which is Chichen itza.
Yucatan has a vast amount of history that there has literally been books written about it. I will hit some main points on this. To start off the most notable influence on history to date has been the Architectural and historic contributions that the Mayans have given to these states. I mention up above that Chichen Itza is one of the Seven Wonders of the World that it because the amount of work that the Mayans put in has stood the test of time. One of the most amazing contributions has been the great pyramid and temples built in many of these great and wonderful cities that show how clever they really were. Nayarit and Yucatan have proven to be beautiful destinations and rich in history. These two states separated by hundreds of miles have proven to have similar concepts but no similar context. The reason being is they both had indigenous influences in what and who there people are today. The foods and traditions that have came from these two states are both unique a portray there agriculture and livestock from the heavy porked based products to the yummy catch of the day on there coastlines. These two places have become Vacation destinations worldwide from the ruins in Yucatan to the snorkeling in Nayarit. These two states demonstrate the beautiful side of Mexico instead of what we see on the news that only occurs in certain regions.
This metaphor reflects language barriers, and misunderstandings of cultural norms, religion and caste roles. Misunderstandings occurred on both Maya and Spanish issues. Both the Spanish and the inhabitants of the Yucatan struggled with their own perceptions and misunderstandings of the other. Colonization brought about multiple realities and distorted self images. These struggles are clearly shown in the sources Clendinnen uses, and the result of these misunderstandings was violence: Spaniard against Indian, Catholic against pagan, Catholic against conquistador, and Crown against settlers. Easy going Guadalajara, Mexico's second city is the area's best-known destination, packed with elegant buildings and surrounded by scenic country. Further afield the land spreads spectacularly green and mountainous, studded with volcanoes and lakes, including Lake Chapala. There are many Fiestas around here and there are among the most vital in Mexico, and there's a legacy of village handicrafts that survives from the earliest days of conquest.
In conclusion, for many, Mexico is simply a country on a map. Even becoming a place that they wish to keep from and forget. For others like me, however; it was a place that hasn’t only reconnected me with my culture, but a home where I had the good fortune of reuniting me with my loved ones. Also, having had helped me come to terms with myself, my trip allowed me to find myself and recover what I had left
When the Spanish began to arrive in Mexico and in Central America in the early 15th century, one of the many civilizations they found was the Maya. The Maya, building upon the Olmec culture, were located in present-day Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, southern Mexico, and the Yucatan Peninsula. Even though they had many similarities, the Maya were separated by language differences. Because of that they were organized into city-states. Since there wasn’t a single city-state powerful enough to impose a political structure, the period from 200 A.D. to the arrival of the Spanish was characterized by the struggle of rival kingdoms for dominance.
Much of the land in southwestern USA has been disputed by the USA and Mexico historically. Mexico is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on one side and by the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Beautiful beaches can be found on the Yucatan peninsula in southern Mexico. It has areas of tall mountains, high plateaus, low coastal plains, and desert. Anyone that has seen a Western movie has probably seen some scenes from the Mexican countryside since some of those films feature bandits hiding out in remote Mexican hideouts. The areas dominated by the Maya are known today as the southern Mexican states: Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatan, Quintana Roo, and Tabasco. The Mayan civilization spread all the way through the nations of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras. A very large expanse of city-states that ruled the area, linked by trade routes. Descendants of the ancient Maya civilization live today in the Yucatán Peninsula of Southern Mexico, Guatemala, and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. The proximity of the Mesoamerican people to each other in the region led to a high degree of cultural interaction between each other.
Guatemala’s staple food is the beloved tamales plus the have a wide variety of exotic fruits and vegetables. In the Central America, most notably the Yucatan Peninsula, are the Maya, a group of people whose polytheistic religion and advanced civilization once flourished (Houston, 43). The Maya reached their peak during the Classic Period from around CE 250 to the ninth century CE when the civilization fell and dispersed (Sharer, 1). Although much has been lost, the gods and goddesses and the religious practices of the Classic Maya give insight into their lives and reveal what was important to this society. The major Mayan gods and goddesses all have common characteristics and, according to “features which they share in large part with the gods of neighboring people of Middle America” (Thompson, 198). Interesting history, variety of foods to eat, and the spirit of celebrations are among the reason why I think Mexico City is a beautiful place, and a place I recommend you should visit.
