The Red Pony by author John Steinbeck is a very notable book for young adults. The central and recurring theme of the four stories told within this short novel is life and death. The stories also deal with conflict between old and new. Unlike most novels for young adults this book is different because John Steinbeck does not try to soften or hide old age and death, but instead presents these themes as they are in reality. The stories tell how the main character, Jody Tiflin, becomes more responsible as he deals with the disappointments and sadness, as well as the successes of real life. This novel and the stories within take place on a ranch that is in the high mountains of Salinas, California in the early 1930’s. The house of the Tiflin Family stands in the middle of the ranch with a bunkhouse, a chicken yard, and a large vegetable patch nearby. The house is surrounded by the brush line, where there is round green tub from which the animals can drink water. The major characters in the Red Pony are Jody Tiflin, who is the main character. He undergoes many experiences in the novel that help him mature. Next is Carl Tiflin, Jody’s father, who is very strict and practical and Billy Buck, the ranch cowhand, who understands Jody and answers all of his questions. There is also Mrs. Tiflin, Jody’s mom, who is always busy in the kitchen but still is understanding. Gitano, an old man who was born on the ranch and who has returned to die and Jody’s grandfather, Mrs. Tiflin’s dad, who ...
Plot: The book took place in the 1860’s in Texas. Jim Coates is off for the summer doing a cattle drive. He left Travis his oldest son in charge of the house. The day after his dad left, Travis went into the dog run and got some meat but a dog was in there. It was a big yellow dog and ate a bunch of the meat. Travis’s mom let his little brother Arliss keep the dog. One day Arliss and the dog were by the stream playing in the water and a she bear and her cub were there. Old Yeller saved Arliss from the she bear. From then on Travis and Old Yeller had a special bond. Old Yeller
Red Kayak is for the teenager who has come to realize that Character is the most important element of a coming-of-age story as it reflects self; Red Kayak should be read by adults who tend to de-value the teenage mind thinking it's not capable of deep thoughts that aren't driven by selfishness. To get the full impact of the moral, I would recommend that teenagers and young adults read Red Kayak, but any age can learn a lesson from this truly heart-wrenching novel. I found Cummings's writing excelled right from the first chapter with gorgeous prose channeled through the thoughts of a fourteen-year-old boy. Her language was simultaneously poetic and character-appropriate. Most remarkable was the unpredictable nature of where the story was going
The novel, ‘Jasper Jones’, is set in a small country town in outback Australia in the 1960’s. The setting was influenced by novels that Silvey, the author had read as a youth. Such as To Kill A Mocking Bird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. people from this same hot desert climate and who have a decent knowledge of past events and times can really get into the book, as you can see the different perspectives of each character living in that time and place.
Eric Dickerson was once the most sought after player coming out of high school in the late 1970’s. Along with Craig James another blue chip recruit they came together at SMU in 1979. How two of the best recruits in the nation came together is just the beginning of “Pony Excess”. SMU was hailed as the best team that money could buy. The film covers the late seventies and early 80’s which was all about the cheating and probation and culminates in 2012 when SMU finally made it back to a bowl game.
The story is set in a small, rural, part of California, known as the Torgas Valley. The novel occurred before World War II in the late part of the Great Depression. The US was still recovering from the downfall of most of the American Industries that fell during the Great Depression. Due to the Industrial Revolution, there were no longer any large industries to support the overflowing amount of workers. The farms were the only place that needed a large work force.
Before 1860 it was virtually impossible to get a letter or other form of correspondence from St. Joseph Missouri to Sacramento California in less than 20 days. 20 days seemed entirely too long for the west coast merchants and bankers to wait for documents from the east. So three men, William Russell, Alexander Majors and William Waddell created the Pony Express. The Pony Express ensured fast and safe delivery of the mail.
The band consists of Chino Moreno (vocals), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Chi Cheng (bass) and Abe Cunningham (drums). The Deftones have built a reputation on their unique sound, which combines elements of punk, hardcore, hip hop, and heavy metal.

Crazy Horse fought for the traditions of his people, until those same people wearied of war and in some cases, turned against him. The setting is nearly a character. Lonely, a bit disgusting, not wholesome, but with a semi-authentic dreaminess. Towns are made of people and towns are full of people, this town is no different. The characters could’ve told the story without the ranch girl. We could have read about Carla, or Andy, or Haskell, Suzy or even Lacey or any others, and been left with much the same story. They all live without growing, little things change but their lives stagnate. They don’t grow into greater things than themselves. Their victories are bitter because they are meaningless. Their failures, crippling. Lacey won’t get Andy either. The ranch girl’s father, can’t quit his job. For all his swagger, Andy is dead. Carla’s marriage doesn’t work out. These pieces of quilt, that make this story, may not directly be the setting, but without them the story has no setting. This town is a dead end. It swallows everyone mentioned in the story in one way or another, or rather they all allow themselves to be
“I've told her and I've told her: daughter, you have to teach that child the facts of life before it's too late” (Hopkinson 1). These are the first three lines of Nalo Hopkinson's short story “Riding the Red”, a modern adaptation of Charles Perrault's “Little Red Riding Hood”. In his fairy tale Perrault prevents girls from men's nature. In Hopkinson's adaptation, the goal remains the same: through the grandmother biographic narration, the author elaborates a slightly revisited plot without altering the moral: young girls should beware of men; especially when they seem innocent.
One of the main symbols of the story is the setting. It takes place in a normal small town on a nice summer day. "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer day; the flowers were blooming profusely and the grass was richly green." (Jackson 347).This tricks the reader into a disturbingly unaware state,
One of the main themes of The Red Pony is Jodys transition from boyhood to manhood. "It's a long time, isn't it?" "And then it'll be about two years more before you can ride." "I'll be grown up." cried Jody "Yep, you'll be an old man," said Billy.” (Ch 3, p 69). This shows Jody’s immaturity by being impatient. In the beginning, he starts to get more mature, but it is a bit grueling for him
Throughout literature, authors employ a variety of strategies to highlight the central message being conveyed to the audience. Analyzing pieces of literature through the gender critics lens accentuates what the author believes to be masculine or feminine and that society and culture determines the gender responsibility of an individual. In the classic fairytale Little Red Riding Hood, the gender strategies appear through the typical fragile women of the mother and the grandmother, the heartless and clever male wolf, and the naïve and vulnerable girl as little red riding hood.
The story begins with a child standing on a street corner in the summer. When a dark brown dog, with a rope tied around his neck approaches him. The author gives no great detail to the setting of this story. Which leads the reader to believe that one must use their own view from the text and go from there. In this case, it seemed to be in the 1920’s, simply because he speaks on the cobble stone avenue and the trucks passing by. Also the way the story is told, seems to be that era.
