The consumption of technical textiles is increasing rapidly in the past two decades. From the Textile Institute, the definition of technical textile is “textile materials and products manufactured primarily for their technical and performance properties rather than their aesthetic or decorative characteristics” (Byrne, 2000). This definition describes technical textiles briefly, but more close to the core of technical textiles than any other definitions. Technical textiles are divided in 12 main application areas by Messe Frankfurt: transport textiles, industrial products and components, medical and hygiene textiles, home textiles, clothing textiles, geotextiles, construction textiles, packing and containment textiles, sport and leisure textiles, agriculture textiles, protective textiles and ecological protection textiles. In this essay, I will talk about medical textiles, automotive textiles, ballistic textiles and sport textiles.
Medical textiles
The medical and healthcare textile sector is an important growing part of word technical textile market. Commonly, the requirements of medical textiles are antibiosis, strength, flexibility, moisture, air permeability and their combinations. From their applications, medical textiles can be separate into four aspects: non-implantable materials (i.e. wound dressings, bandages, and plasters), extracorporeal devices (such as artificial kidney, liver and lung), implantable materials (sutures, vascular grafts, artificial ligaments, artificial joints, etc.) and healthcare/ hygiene products (such as bedding, clothing, surgical gowns, cloths and wipes).

The sport equipments and facilities include tennis racket, cycling, golf clubs, sailcloth and hot air ballon. Compared with sportswear and fitness wear, sport equipments and facilities involved more composite materials.
Conclusion
Technical textile materials are very important in all aspects of our life. New developments continue to exploit the range of fibers and fabric-forming techniques which are available. For example, advances in fiber science have resulted in a new breed of wound fressing to improve the healing process or given a higher modulus property to achieve a higher level ballistic protection. Advances composite materials containing combinations of fibers and fabric have been developed for applications where biocompatibility and strength are required.
