In “Sleepers” by Lorenzo Carcaterra is a book that was written and made into a Movie. In 1996 Barry Levinson, directed and started Jason, Patric as Lorenzo Carcaterra, Brand, Pitt (Michael Sullivan), Ron Eldard (John Reilly) and Billy Crudup (Tommy Marcano). The four boys were sexually and physically abused and suffer from violent behavior, drug and alcohol addiction, PTSD, and relationship disorders. Children are more sensitive to physical abuse, they show symptoms of physical abuse in short run and more effects in the long run. Michael was less than a year old, when his mother, Helen McDonald, known as Ma moved with him and her other seven children to Jamaica Plain, a neighborhood of working-class Irish families, escaping the insecurities and oppression of Columbia Point, a mostly black neighborhood. Then, they move to Old Colony after being forced to leave Jamaica Plain because Ma’s dad believed they were deteriorating the house too rapidly and it represented a loss on its book value. They all live in Old Colony for a very long time, experiencing some of the worst crimes and life experiences before the ones that survived Southie’s lifestyle could ever being able to get out.

According to the Center for Disease Control, one in every three girls and one in every five boys are sexually abused by an adult at some time during childhood. Child abuse is a vicious cycle. After a child is abused it puts a deterrent on his or her ability to succeed in life. Examples of this are adults who were abused as children are twice as likely to become abusers themselves. The majority of people in prisons were abused as children. It is no wonder why childhood trauma has such a horrible impact on a person’s personality and brain. Trauma is a serious consideration in special education. When a child is exposed to a traumatic event, such as abuse, neglect or death, it can have a lifelong effect on their mental health. The effects of child abuse are multiple. The pain and trauma the abused child goes through is just a small part of how this cauldron of hidden depravity in our society affects all of us. Wrecked lives can be seen in persons of all ages and in all walks of life. Society as a whole is also effected by child abuse both in negative and positive ways. In this essay I will present some of the factor and results of this violent behavior on individuals as well as our culture.
