Although I am not the best writer, I have come a long way and improved immensely from my first essay “Where is the Line Drawn?” at the beginning of the semester to my last essay “Differences” towards the end of the semester. If it was possible I would have loved to compare my very first essay from semester 1 to my last essay in semester 2 to show the extraordinary change and my writing journey. Throughout the entire 2nd semester I have acquired some new writing, reading and analytical skills. Some of the important writing skills I learned are coming up with an arguable thesis, critical thinking and information literacy. Before I did not really have argumentative thesis’s in my writing, which made my papers never really, have a purpose; why am I writing this? I still have trouble every now and again, a comment you left on one of my papers said “good, but express your thesis more boldly, a directly.” I tend to always make my thesis to broad or too narrow when writing my essays. I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
The following final drafts, drafts, notes, and peer review letters represent my growth as a writer in the span of one semester. I learned quite a bit about myself and the things i can do to improve my writing and the methods of doing proper research in order to write a proper research essay. Though i have seen an improvement within these essays, i feel i still have much to practice upon.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
Within this essay the writer will show how reflection can inform and improve their professional practice. Throughout there will be identification and critical analysis of the key elements of reflective practice in relation to the role of the teacher. There will also be focus on what is reflective practice, Gibb’s (1988) view of the reflective practice cycle process, Van Manen (1991) view of reflection before action, Schon (1983) view of reflection in action and the view of reflection after action. The term reflective practice relates to the way in which teachers look at their own experiences to see what is working and what is not.
No writer is the same, and no writer is perfect. As you start writing and learning new and different things in life you develop as a writer. Being in AP Language and Composition after each assignment I learned new things about me as a writer. I learned the effort it takes to make a really good essay. Prior to this class i would just whip up an essay and not really edit and revise it- it was basically one draft with small edits and turned in. Whereas with this class i learned to make a worthwhile reading of an essay by taking time on each paper and getting other people 's perspectives to see what is good and what is lacking. We should strive for perfection in all walks of life, but if we are to be successful on life`s journey we must hold these truths to be self-evident: that error(s) are a must in growth and perfection is impossible. Throughout this fall semester in Writing 101, I have grown as a more confident writer. I have learned to overcome the fear and hindrance of inadequately transcribing my true thoughts to paper- selfishly working to please the reader and not my idea(s). Sharing my perspective, without fixed add-ins, is what makes me unique as a writer. I feel this can lead to constructive debates and can act as a learning tool for uninformed readers, but if the writing tampers the room for debate and learning is lessened. During the first essay that our class had to write, things like my thesis was strong and focused. In the second essay that our class wrote, I was able to notice the way we are supposed to document sources and how to site the sources we use in our essays or in general. From an early age I was aware that teachers treated students differently based on race, ethnicity, class, and gender. From K-12, I attended racially, ethnically, and economically diverse public schools. Some of my classmates’ parents had Ivy League educations and others were had little education. Interestingly, among my classmates, there were both educated people and uneducated people on welfare. My relationship with reading began when I was about 3 or 4 years old. When I first started this journey with reading I did not really like it. I only read books because I was forced to in school and at home. I did not understand why people would get so excited when a new book was coming out, or why people would go on and on about how good a book was. I did not really take interest in reading books until I had finally found a book series that I loved: the Geronimo Stilton series written by Elisabetta Dami. I loved those books because they were action-packed, humorous, and captivating: I was so hooked on to that series. My abilities at the beginning of the semester were very simple, that were based on the material that I have taken in the bridge program and writing 101. They were mainly about the skills on how to start an academic essay. One of the challenges that I faced at the beginning of the semester was the fact that last essay I wrote was a year ago (fall 2015). Another issue was when I faced an argumentative essay I realized that my brainstorming were good, but I lacked in delivering it to build up my draft. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic.
