The U.S. Sanitary Commission was organized because of the improper hygiene of the soldiers and hospitals during the war time. During war many soldiers were dying because of sickness related to improper medical procedures and overall un-cleanliness of the camps. Many Doctors became worried about the soldiers and upset about the fact that they lived in horrible conditions during the war. In order to help combat the many deaths they organized a group of volunteers to help teach the soldiers and hospital workers proper cleaning techniques. They were also concerned with uniting the various relief organizations together so that those who were fighting in the war received everything that they needed. The U.S. Sanitary Commission also helped provide the proper supplies that those in war needed such as medical supplies, food, clothes, nurses, communication with family, and transitional housing. This organization paved the way for concern for all public health.
When the Civil war hit women's roles changed dramatically. Many of the war and post war relief efforts were comprised mostly of women. In the past very few woman helped during the war, but with the Civil War being a major rift in America there was much more work that needed to be done. Women would do this work. They volunteered their time in organizations such as the Sanitary Commission. Because of the work of women in the Civil War it began to become more acceptable for woman to have more than just volunteer jobs. However it put more pressure on women to not just be at home but to actually get out there and do something of importance. They helped the poor because they believed that if given the opportunity then they would one day succeed and be productive citizens like non-poor Americans. They also strove to figure out why the poor were poor. They wanted to change the social as well as economic standing of those who were afflicted by poverty.
Jane Addams was the woman was influential in the Settlement House movement. The first settlement house she organized was called Hull House. Jane Addams is credited for looking out for the down trodden and truly wanting to fix the poverty problem in America. She also helped congress pass child regulation laws in America. Addams was also the first woman to be given the honor of representing the National Conference of Charities and Correction as president of the organization.
