It seemed that segregation was an idea that has been obsolete in the United States for more than fifty years. However for Charleston, Mississippi it is another story. Charleston High School originally became an integrated high school in 1970. Since then, the seniors at Charleston High School always have had segregated proms -- a white prom and a black prom. In the documentary you see the students worried about the prom, their parents reactions and their future .In 1997, actor Morgan Freeman, a citizen of Charleston, offered to fund the prom if the school had one integrated prom. His offer was ignored. Ten years later, in 2008, Freeman generously offered again. This is where the story begins.

In many parts of America, people would find it impossible to believe that this film is depicting real events happening in 2008. Yet in other parts, where the under-current of racism is palpable even if not manifested as overtly as at Charleston High in Mississippi, minorities will be able to relate to their own experiences of being made to feel different and unwelcome in many subtle ways every single day. It was shocking to find out this was still happening in this day and age, I rarely witness to any kind of cruelty or racism so to find out that this was a normal thing in Charleston, Mississippi. This was appalling to say the least. Teens are dealing with issues that a teen shouldn’t even be bothered to deal with. The white student were put in a situation where they either defy their parents and do what’s right, or go along with what they said and fall in the line of ignorance. The movie really showed just who was willing to fight for what’s right and who were too scared to break questionable traditions.

I was glad that at the ending of the movie most kids went to the integrated prom and the ones who did had a fun time. It is very unfortunate though that the white prom was a success and was repeated the year after. I don’t think the parents are aware of the message they are sending their kids and just how hateful it really is. Some parents said it was a harmless tradition they wish to continue but this tradition is very far from harmless. In the documentary, you see the students worried about the prom, their parent’s reactions and their future, but in the end most of them had a very enjoyable prom and the white kids who did decide to go to the integrated prom had a wonderful time wishing everyone could join them. Thanks to Morgan Freeman, he has changed the lives at Charleston High School forever.
