When Congressman Joel Pritchard, William Bell, and Barney McCallum arrived home after a day of golf, they found their children restless, and tired of the “old” summer activities. They set out to create a game that would entertain them throughout the summer. Their ideas to create the game came from the hopes of creating a game that would be both challenging, but easy to set up and play. As the game became more popular, people began to make their own paddles using wood jigsaws, and marine plywood. Today, over 100,000 people play Pickleball in the United States. According to Barney McCallum, the game was named, “Pickleball” after the Pichards’s dog Pickles who would often case and run after the ball when played.
