Guy de Maupassant was a successfully popular writer during his era. Born on August 5, 1850 in Dieppe, France, he grew up amongst his family in his birthplace of Normandy. Although his plentiful short stories could not cover up his families happy façade. Cracks emerged due to Guys father’s constant affairs that led to a permanent separation between the couple at the tender age of eleven. The divorce left its mark on Guy where he became frightened of marriage and perceived the men in his stories as wrongful or ridiculous. His mother introduced Guy to an influential friend of hers named Gustave Flaubert, who eventually became a father figure to him along with encouraging him to pursue the world of literature. Flaubert encouraged writing about things that he knew but to also disdain from and ideas of making money for his stories. The mentoring he received is reflected in the themes and characters of his stories’ much like that of The Necklace, written in 1884. Although he lived a short life, it was very productive with this many writings and novels. Guy de Maupassant was born on August 5, 1850 in Dieppe, France to aristocratic parents. His father was a flirtatious man that had many affairs, which led to Guy’s parents divorce at the age of eleven. Guy was a good student throughout school and then in 1869 he began to study law in Paris. Sadly at the age of 20 he left school to serve in the army during the Franco Prussian War. After Maupassant returned, he mother introduced him to one of her friends, who eventually became a big part of Guy’s life as well as a father figure. Gustave Flaubert and Maupassant had a long lasting friendship. Flaubert mentored Guy about his philosophy of writing and taught him no only to write a... ... middle of paper ... ...ld feel. All of that changed by the middle of the novel when the necklace suddenly disappeared. I soon then began growing a connection and compassion for the wife as she dedicated years of her life as well has Mr. Losiel to pay back the expensive duplicate diamond necklace. Only to be completely shocked at the surprise twist in the end realizing that the necklace was a mere piece of costume jewelry that only cost about as much as Madame Losiel’s dress she so badly wanted. In the end my views definetly changed about Mrs. Losiel. In her efforts to help pay back the necklace, she lost years of her life. This made me realize that it may be better to come clean at the beginning of a problem rather then get into a mess to fix it yourself. When in turn your efforts may not be needed and it may just be a better option to be forgiven then to waste time worrying.
