Twenty years ago, the use of the death penalty was increasing. Twenty years later it is decreasing due to shortage of lethal injection chemicals. In the United States there was thirty-nine executions in 2013, this is the second time in the past twenty years the annual number of inmates put to death has dropped below forty. This is a ten percent reduction from last year. Using the right resources and research methods will guarantee accurate conclusions, researchers should understand the difference between research methods and choose the one that is appropriate for their study. Using information from previous studies will only harm the new study, provide false results and ultimately give incorrect information to the public.

Capital punishment in the United States is among the most debated issues being discussed. Arguments are strong for both of the sides of the issue, those who want to eliminate the death penalty and those who see to expand its use. The key concepts behind American criminal justice sanctions are, retribution, incapacitation, deterrence and rehabilitation. Retribution argues that the states has the right to execute some sort of pain and punishment equal to or greater than the pain suffered by the victim, that’s why the death penalty is the perfect explanation for the punishment. An eye for an eye can commonly be referred as retribution (Goertzel, 2004).
The two procedures of deterrence are, general and specific. General deterrence try’s to find options to prevent crime from happening in the first place. Specific deterrence finds ways to prevent the criminals from re-offending in the future by punishing them for their previous criminal activities. ...ristics such as age, race, gender, education etc. The only way to use this sample is if other methods are not available. In order for a purposive sampling approach to be successful, researchers need to be careful and not use results from previous convenience samples (Purposive sampling, 2012).
Conclusion
There are numerous way of conducting a study on death penalty but the right way should be researched ahead of time before conclusion are made. Proving current and accurate information on death penalty statistics should be researched based on new information found, using previous studies will only hurt the new research and provide false information to the public and the government’s database. Approaching the right subjects who fit the requirements for the study and have characteristics that carry out criminal behavior will provided the right statistics for the study.
