Executive Summary: The world around us is suffering from a shortage in food, this shortage might harm the world in the long term and we might not have enough resources for the world in 50 years from now. Every single person on Earth is responsible for this mess, either because some of us buy more than what we need and throw the waste away or because some of us do not have the enough education to know more about the food crisis. Their idea is fresh, new and adds character to the business. Their idea is instead of throwing away the fresh produce leftovers of the day, they preserve and keep them to use in a “Special of the day” order the next day. The “Special of the day” order concept is to attract customers and have them try something new. This also creates a nice feel to the restaurant and makes it look more creative and inventive. It also serves our main goal that is using what’s left from the previous day in something useful that generates money instead of losing it. Another proposed solution that is being considered as a backup is conducting a waste audit. The waste audit would help us measure the exact amount of waste that is being wasted everyday. The passage written by Bill McKibben, entitled “Waste Not, Want Not” was written to bring to the forefront the huge amount of waste that a small community of only 500 people accumulate in a small amount of time. He educated the reader by showing in detail the amounts of waste that is created on a daily basis. I never though how much trash I throw out every week. As in Gatorade bottles, snack packs, pizza container, other food container, and everyday use like glasses cleaner and cotton swab. I really got thinking in how much I throw out and how much other people throw out every day and how it’s hurting our environment by not recycling what we can in our daily life. I think people should start using plastic container that they could reuse, so that every time you buy pizza you don’t need to throw out a card board box or the one from the Student Center Café. Kitsilano’s population has increased significantly in the last few years; in 2006 the population was 40,000 and by 2011 the population had grown over 4% to 41,700 (Statistics Canada, 2016). This data suggests that the population will continue to grow, creating more potential customers for ZWM. The majority of the Kitsilano population has the income to afford high quality products and possess the desire to purchase these goods for themselves and their families. The Kitsilano area also has many local gyms and yoga studios. This is an indicator that Kitsilano residents are concerned about maintaining their health.

Food waste is huge issue these days. It is a huge amount of waste that ends up in landfills and can have lasting effects on the environment. One of major issues of food waste is the greenhouse gases that it produces. Methane gas is the main culprit when it comes to the gases being released. This can absorb infrared radiation and heat up the earth’s atmosphere and cause climate change. Another issue that food waste causes is, water loss due to use for production of fruits and vegetables.
Traditional methods of waste disposal have proven to be ineffective and have caused harmful effects on the environment. The most popular and inexpensive way to get rid of garbage is burial, but burying your problems does not necessarily mean getting rid of them. Landfill sites pose as severe ecological threats as these mass garbage dump yards overflow with trash and frequently contaminate our air, soil and water with hazardous wastes. About 400 million tons of hazardous wastes are generated each year1. A large-scale release of these materials can cause thousands of deaths and may poison the environment for many years. For example many industrial companies around the world cannot afford to enforce the strict pollution regulations set by many developed countries. This usually forces these types of companies to move to developing countries where pollution regulations are very lenient. These developing countries knowingly accept environmentally hazardous companies usually because they are in desperate need of employment. The harmful effects of these companies were clearly illustrated in the 1960s and 1970s when residents living near Minamata Bay, Japan, developed nervous disorders, tremors, and paralysis in a mysterious epidemic. The root was later found to be a local industry that had released mercury, a highly toxic element, into Minamata Bay. The disaster had claimed the lives of 400 people1. Since 1970 you can bet that a lot more than 400 people have died as a result of waste disposal. If the type of waste disposal were cheaper and effective we wouldn’t have to deal with waste problems, which still plague mankind today.
