Zeitoun: Never Losing Faith in the American Dream In Dave Eggers’ novel, Zeitoun, an immigrant from Syria faces the struggles of Islamophobia and has to overcome the negative connotations that come with being an immigrant that practices a faith that people do not fully understand. Abdulrahman Zeitoun, born in Jableh, Syria, was a Muslim-American who spent the majority of his life trying to achieve the American dream. The American dream is different for everyone, and even more unconventional for immigrants. Zeitoun is a very selfless and hard working man, so his American dream includes having other Americans, as well as American authorities, allow him to have the equality and opportunity that he deserved. Not only does Zeitoun have to fight the ignorance of some Americans, but he also has to fight the effects of Hurricane Katrina. In some aspects, Zeitoun is the perfect American. From the moment he arrived in the United States, Zeitoun did everything he could to prove himself to his new country’s citizens. Unfortunately, some people relate terrorism with the faith of Islam. The author expressed, “Kathy had not wanted their family to become collateral damage in a war that had no discernible fronts, no real shape, and no rules” (252). Both Kathy, a converted Muslim, and Zeitoun, a born Muslim, knew what the future looked like in terms of discrimination and inequality. The idea of islamophobia is so open to different interpretations, and the fight against it has not yet accomplished all of the goals.
