What is a gang? Well according to most gang members, they aren’t a gang, they are a family. Now according to Oxford Dictionaries, a gang is “an organized group of criminals (gangs, n.d.).” Now gangs are known to be violent and having no mercy for others. When a gang is thought of, most people think of either some type of biker gang, or maybe even a gang from the “hood”. Now a group of friends hanging out in school doesn’t seem to differ too much from a gang from just looking at them. This is because they all share the same interest, and they all seem to wear similar clothing. So what is the difference between a gang? The last gang is the violent gang, is centered on the goal of obtaining emotional satisfaction through violent activities. Now that we have established what a gang is, and a definition of a gang. Now, the things that I want to discuss about youth gangs and delinquency are a background of gangs, the risks of gangs and risk to those around them, and how gangs work. Gangs have been around for a very long time. Gangs were still around back in the late 1800s. Now gangs have evolved so much from that time period. In the 1920s – 1930s, gangsters were very classy dressed men, these people were in the gangs to make a lot of money. Yet, there was people that were in prison gangs also, they were in them for protection. Now in today’s times, things have changed. People don’t carry the same ideals on why they want to join up with a life of crime. Yet, here is some a few of the reasons behind why people do the things they do with a gang. For instance, there is an officer in Gainesville, he was simply going to a call where a neighbor was complaining about some inner city kids who were playing basketball. He could have told those kids that they needed to stop playing ball and get out of the road, yet he did something that was above and beyond the call of his job. He got out and joined these kids, and played basketball with them. A person nearby seen the officer and his kind act and took a video and posted it to Facebook. The officer had no idea of this and told the kids the next time he came he would bring back up. Well the video of him playing went viral and now has been seen by over one million people, and Shaq (a professional basketball player) showed up and talked to the officer. They went back to that same street with a few more officers and played a few more kids. One month later the officer showed up with an even bigger surprise, he had gotten a call to bring all of this kids from that street, and their parents down to court side seats at the Orlando Magic game. Now the officer has taken it one step farther. He went back to visit the kids and show them the surprise of their life. He had created their own backyard basketball court, and not only that he brought somebody special to help them break it in. The officer got one of the
