When we meet other people we have first hand impressions of how they are. Sometimes due to things such as being more wealthy, having more friends, or even being more attractive leads people to believe that those with the positive characteristics are living the life. Not realizing that those people they thought were all good might have been through a lot or are not happy in life. The same can be said for people who have negative qualities that are not desired by many. Basically, appearances can be not as they seem and in the short story, “Young Goodman Brown” we see this play out as goodman brown faces the challenges of going in the forest for his evil journey. One of these characters was young goodman browns wife Faith, who plays a big part in the fable. She wears pink ribbons which symbolize innocence and purity, “letting the wind play with the pink ribbons of her cap”(Young Goodman Brown). He loves faith very much from her pink ribbons to her entire persona, “she’s a blessed angle on earth;and after this one night I’ll cling to her skirts and follow her to heaven”(Young Goodman Brown). The ability for him to compare her to an angel, truly shows his admiration and zeal he has for his wife. Another character we are introduced to is a mysterious man that leads young goodman brown in his journey to the dark forest , “beheld the figure of a man , in grave and decent attire, seated at the foot of an old tree”. This man is presented as a helpful guide to goodman brown, but later in the story we see that he had bad intentions for him. He had a snake staff which resembles the story in the bible when the devil (masquerading as a snake) told Adam and eve to eat from the tree of life,”his staff, which bore the likeness of a great black snake”. It has similarity, because the devil led them to do something bad and in young goodman brown he is leading goodman to the evil forest. Which means his travel guide is the devil and young goodman brown does not

    Young Goodman Brown is about a young, newly wedded man who leaves his wife, Faith, and to go on a journey into the forest one night. Young Goodman Brown has an innocent and maybe even naïve soul and was looked upon by townspeople as a “silly fellow” (Hawthorne 83). He is accompanied by a mysterious, older man who is later on revealed to be the devil. As they are walking, Young Goodman Brown tries to turn back several times and at one point succeeds in getting rid of the devil. However, when he sees that even his wife has surrendered to the same evil path that he was on, he stops resisting and continues into the forest. He ends up at a witches’ sabbath where he sees familiar faces of people whom he previously looked up to for spiritual guidance; he also finds Faith there and becomes devastated. In the end, he cries out to resist the devil and then wakes up to find himself alone in the forest.

That knowledge gained outside traditional and physical realms can affect the mind and the perception of the world is a fascinating subject. I also found this interesting in conjunction with some of the concepts of literary critics we reviewed this week, as the question of what literature is and what it should do becomes important in the discussion of what happens to Goodman Brown, but subsequently what happens to the reader of his story.

Take the name Young Goodman Brown for example; innocence is associated with the word "young" as well as the word "good." Hawthorne uses these words to give Brown a naïve persona much like most young Puritans of his time. His newly wed wife, Faith, symbolizes the faith he clings to in his life. Hawthorne must have also used her name as a symbol for not only Brown but for all Puritans. Puritans cling to faith blindly hoping they are the chosen ones entitled an entrance to heaven. The color pink, of the ribbon she wears, is a color associated with childhood innocence and purity. Young, innocent, and pure are all things Brown considers his wife to be at the beginning of the story. After we are introduced to the first characters Brown sets off into the forest where he will eventually learn the truth of things and in doing so lose his innocence. Once on his journey into the forest Hawthorne writes, "He had taken a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest, which barely stood aside to let the narrow path creep through, and closed immediately behind" (148). Brown is venturing into the unknown; the path closing behind him is symbolic of there being no turning back once he has lost his innocence. Once on his way with the devil, Brown learns of his father's and grandfather's affiliations with him. Once honest people in Brown's eyes, these men now become symbols of how surrounded by evil he actually is.
