The account of Young Goodman Brown is a fictional story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This is about a young gentleman who looks at the world at an exterior point of view, not knowing the fundamental problems in his surroundings. This tale describes the obstacles we face in our day to day lives. One can say that Hawthorne has effectively retained his readers’ undivided attention, yet communicated to them a valuable lesson in this story. In the beginning, Young Goodman Brown was a much acquitted young man. He was the type of individual who saw the good in everyone and, in turn, never recognized the bad. One could admit that Goodman Brown was very guarded from the evils of the world. That was until he was exposed to great evil all in one night. Basically, Brown realized that all that he thought he knew about the people in his life were merely shadows of what they truly are. Everyone that he looked up to turned out to be evil, thus leaving him dismayed. Even though it is not clear if the events that occurred were real or a dream, but from that night on, Young Goodman Brown never trusted anyone ever again.
As people, we can relate to the character of Young Goodman Brown. Brown was ignorant to the fact of the existence of a dark side in certain people. In life we have certain people that come into our lives, not knowing the truth of their personalities. The only thing we can possibly know is what other people display from the exterior. In turn, he loses his connection with God, and gains a new belief in the Devil. This symbolism of the devil in this tale is related to the dark side of any man. There are moments in life where we are faced with obstacles that can easily break us down. However, it is up to us to find the strength to power through.
All in all, the tale of Young Goodman Brown is a symbol of the misfortune we face in our lives. We tend to believe in something greater. The reason we do that is for inspiration to become greater as people and hold on to the faith that we can achieve all things we set our minds to. There may be obstacles that will try to hinder one from their path, but it is ultimately up to them to hold on to their faith.

Young Goodman Brown was a man who was naïve to the world around him. Ever since he was a child, he had always practiced a very Godly life. Not only does he believe that everyone around him follows the same path, but he also believes that it is the only path. This naivety and innocence was taken from him by the Devil, who opened his eyes to the world of evil around him. After the pagan ceremony, which Brown attends, the Devil even states “Now are ye undeceived! Evil is the nature of mankind” (Hawthorne 9). By saying this, Hawthorne is trying to say that it is better to know the whole truth than to live a lie. By not knowing the truth about evil existing in Salem village, Brown has essentially been living a life that is not complete or accurate. This perfect and fair world that was found in the Bible is not the real world that surrounds him. When his innocence is stolen from him so abruptly, he begins to lose both his faith and stability in the world.

During Goodman Brown’s journey, he recognized Goody Cloyse, his catechism teacher, the preacher, and Deacon Gookin is going to the devil’s meeting. However, after seeing his church members at the devil’s meeting, Goodman says, “My Faith is gone! and There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. Come devil! for to thee is this world given” (Hawthorne 27). “But, where is Faith?”, asked Goodman Brown (Hawthorne 29). As hope came into his heart, he trembled when he found the pink ribbon of his wife, Faith, in the forest. At that moment, Goodman Brown lost his faith in his family and church members. Goodman becomes unforgiving of others and believes only evil can be created from evil and there is nothing that anyone can do to change it. Within every man there is an innate difference between good and evil and Hawthorne's deliberate use of ambiguity mirrors this complexity of human nature. Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown, is misled by believing in the perfectibility of humanity and in the existence of moral absolutes. According to Nancy Bunge, Hawthorne naturally centers his story upon a Puritan protagonist to convey the "self-righteous" that he regards as the "antithesis of wisdom"(4). "Young Goodman Brown" is a short story published in 1835 by American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne. But as the story goes along we find that his family and the other leader in the village did some pretty wicked stuff back in the day that has not been talk about. This is going to set the tone for a moral conflict for young Goodman in what could also be dream like state of mind.

Because of Hawthorne's Puritan upbringing, much of writings are moral allegories set in colonial New England. Hawthorne returns again to Salem in "Young Goodman Brown" and deals with the theme of the loss of innocence. This theme works to argue the benefits and consequences of Goodman Brown's beliefs before and after his encounter with the devil as well as the beliefs of the Puritans as a whole.
First, we will start with Goodman Brown. I think that Hawthorne’s own past is and complications are reveled in his story about Goodman Brown. I believe that Goodman Brown has had a rough past and is trying to reach beyond his past in order to reach heaven. Goodman has some major problems with his wife, Faith, and everyone else in his community. I think that he is seeing everyone as perfect people, but he is having impure thoughts about himself and his past. In order to deal with these problems within himself, he is making up that everyone has this awful bad side. When he goes into the forest, he believes he is talking to the devil with looks much like his grandfather. The devil is feeding him bad thoughts about everyone he knows, even his own father and his wife Faith. Next, I believe that Goodman Brown has had a rough past and in order for him to overcome this within himself he must search for attention. This attention may not be needed from his wife or community members, I believe it is needed from him. Young Goodman Brown goes from being overly trusting to becoming a paranoid, untrusting man. Once Goodman Brown arrives at the destination and walks with the stranger, they start talking about Goodman Brown's family and how they had traveled down the very same road he is now, however Goodman Brown refuses to believe the traveler: “‘I marvel they never spoke of these matters. Brown felt that he made the right decision and did not follow the devil, but everyone else around him did. Even his own wife follows the devil. She is supposed to represent holiness and faith, and she is just as corrupt as everyone else. This portrays how even the church, which is supposed to be holy, can be corrupt.
