There is a rise in young adults living with their parents that has reached a high of 36 percent over the last few years (Dettling, Board, & Hsu, 2014). Young adults that are still living at home or move back home after college have many reasons why. This group is called the boomerang children because of their returning back home with the parents (Feldman, 2014). The boomerang group is usually incapable to live on their own because of unfortunate economic outcomes (Dettling, Board, & Hsu, 2014). Some of the biggest reasons why young adults are living with their parents are dealing with economic issues and relationships breakups. Some jobs that that individuals have are the bare minimum, which causes them having a hard time to making ends met (Feldman, 2014). Also, higher education is not cheap so young adults have to save up money to continue their education as well to be able to pay back their student loans. Debt from student loans is why many young adults are making the decision to live at home with parents so they can pay back the loans and save up money to get a place of their own later on. Trying to get a place on your own is not as easy especially if you do not have a high credit score so young adult also move back home to build up their credit score to be able eventually move out on their own. When moving back home with parents after being out on your own is not an easy decision because usually after being on your own you gain independence and moving back in the individual may feel as he or she may lose that respect. Another thing that has been happening over the years young adult live with the person who they are in a relationship with and when the relationship ends the individual may also have to move back in with the parents to save up money. Homelessness….. Many assume those who are homeless took part in some type of drug or alcohol abuse which lead them to become homeless. It is an ongoing situation that has not been fully resolved in order to lower the risk of individuals of the youth population becoming homeless. The age group for homeless individuals who qualify as youth is nineteen years of age and under. In the United States, dysfunctional families are occurring more frequent, which is a vital reason adolescents are running away from their homes. This alone puts many of our youth at risk of becoming homeless. When adolescents leave their homes, it decreases their chances of having a smooth transition into adulthood. ... a lot of pressure on high school graduates by parents and employers to get a degree if they want to make something of themselves. After being in the workforce over twenty-five years, I have experience well as qualifications that should make me more desirable than the twenty-two year old with little work experience. If he has a diploma, he will get the job before me almost every single time. That is why I am back in college after all these years. Attending college is a choice that anyone can make with their loved ones advice. Sit down with someone who knows you and write down your dreams and desires. Figure out what you would like to accomplish in life and investigate if you have a case for or against college.
Moving far away from family and friends can be tough on a child at a young age. It has its pros and cons. One learns how to deal with moving away from the people they love and also learn how to deal with adjusting to new ways of life. Everything seems so different and at a young age one feels like they have just left the whole world behind them. That was an experience that changed my life as a person. It taught me how to deal with change and how to adjust. It developed me from a young boy into a mature young man.
This essay is a reflection on identifying, discussing and applying useful resources available to me as a returning adult student to help me perform and succeed in an online academic environment. There are three key areas of impact: stress, time management and wellness and throughout the essay I will reference two great articles on adult learning, my decision to join the gym and my results from the Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory.5 By looking at stress, time management and wellness along with having candid feedback from my professor, helpful guidelines and support I will reflect on having resources on hand as an adult online student.
One of the prevalent problems that distract the student’s ability to learn and develop skills that are required to graduate high school is family homelessness. According to the state center for homeless families, 1 out of 45 children in the US are homeless that averagely 1.6 children are homeless every year. There are a variety of factors that cause family homelessness they include domestic violence, lack of affordable housing, decreasing government supports, lack of social support, or the challenges of raising children alone (Stetser, & Stillwell, 2014).
Lastly, there's just not enough time for anything in their life, like they can't mentally or physically handle school and their lifestyle. Take me for example, a college student and a mother of one. I find it hard to successfully attend college and keep a job at the same time. My family and myself, right now, are at the bottom of the barrel. When we moved back from Tennessee, we had to use all the money we had saved.
Being forced to move back home after college graduation is one of many obstacles students face while getting accustomed to the new debt they inherit after school. Imagine, upon graduation of high school the excitement one must feel about finally being away from the watchful eye of mama and papa bird. Headed to college to live on their own, freedom to be an adult and make decisions as such. If lucky enough to be one of the one’s who will make it through the entire four years of higher learning with a degree, evidence of long nights, dedication, and hard work, great rewards are expected, right? Wrong, many students in modern society will be met with a harsh reality and be bound to the nest which they took flight from four years prior. Student loans will become the new chain holding them captive to their parents. Unable to afford to live independently right after college graduation is a price some must pay for pursuing higher education.

The student and his or her family are expected to take an active role in preparing the student to take responsibility for his or her own life once school is finished. Where once school provided a centralized source of education, guidance, transportation, and even recreation, after students leave school, they will need to organize their own lives and needs and navigate among an array of adult service providers and federal, state, and local programs. This can be a daunting task one for which the student and his or her family need to be prepared.
In fact, the Washington post clearly stated “Parenting is an ongoing renegotiation of the balance between expectations and supports, and parents can recognize that college kids need them in different ways from before”, therefore it makes it understandable that college students today have to learn to part ways with their parents. Due to parents having to take on 2-3 part-time jobs or low wage jobs, parents are required to deal with long hours, unusual hours, lack of benefits that cover paid sick days, paid medical, parental leave, and vacation time. Parents have to choose their family time or making income and income is priority to try and provide the necessary needs like a home, electric, and food. This struggle between income and family has put tremendous stress on parents which lead to a higher level of depression which affects the whole family. Some young adult children are forced into the work force before they graduate to help the family. If these young adults are one of the fortunate ones that don’t need to join the workforce, they are still faced with taking on an adult role due to having to play mommy or daddy to their younger siblings. Having this kind of responsibility at such a young age causes some of these young adults to fall into a depression or stressed out with all the responsibility that they start rebelling authority or looking for
Once a child goes to school, they could express many of their thoughts, feelings, and needs, and they start taking more significant steps towards independence. Meanwhile, as we go into adulthood, adults can choose things like where they want to live, what they want to eat, what job they will do, etc. In adulthood, it consists of changes in lifestyles and relationships. Furthermore, as an adult, life changes, such as leaving home, finding a long‐term romantic relationship, beginning a career, and starting a family. Many young adults first leave their house to attend college or to take a job in another city, and that’s where their independence starts. Also, Adults attain at least some level of attitudinal, emotional, and physical freedom.
Individuals in my generation that decide to go away for college may graduate with a degree but they also graduate with debt and have a hard time finding work in their area of study. College graduates are young and many may not have much experience in their field. It is a bittersweet option to go to college and further your education, I am all for it, but I am not for getting yourself in tons of debt, that will cause you to live your whole life paying off student loans and such. Which is one of the reasons why I chose to stay at home and go to community college, I’m saving money while still getting a great education. In earlier generations, people may not have felt that college was important because they needed a job to support themselves and their families. That is understandable because in the early years becoming an adult meant turning of age, 18, getting a job, moving out and starting your own family, but now turning 18 doesn’t mean you automatically are an adult and can move out and start your own life, I have friends that went to college, have a job but still are not able to move out on their own even in their
The number of young adults living at home has consistently increased since the recession, despite a seemingly improving economy (Shah, 2013). According to Lisa Wade, an associate professor at Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA, approximately 17% of young adults amid the ages of 25 and 44 still live at home (Wade, 2013). There are several unrelated issues that contribute to this staggering number. When trying to live out on your own; there is much to consider. If you are living alone, then all the bills would be solely your responsibility. However, having a roommate or two would distributing the financial obligation can be helpful. This can invade on the level of privacy that can be accumulated from living singly.
