Isoroku, his first name,meant his fathers age when he was born ,which was 56(Thomas Hughes). He was the Tankano’s 6th child(Thomas Hughes). He changed his last name because he was adopted by the Yamamoto family(Thomas Hughes). Both his parents died and thats why he was adopted(Thomas Hughes). The attack, which occurred in the early morning of December 7th, 1941, resulted in the United States abandoning its policy of isolationism and entering the war. The U.S. officially declared a state of war between the Japanese Empire and the United States on December 8th, but for those who were at Pearl Harbour, like Thomas Mahoney, the war began on that morning at 8AM (Dunnahoo 5). Mahoney was born in New Jersey and enlisted at the age of 18 in 1940 to the United States Navy along with his brother, Harold. He was eventually stationed aboard the U.S.S. Curtiss at Pearl Harbour as an electrician’s mate when the surprise attack by the Japanese occurred, and went on to serve on board the U.S.S. O’Bannon, the most decorated U.S. Destroyer of World War Two, and where he would see most major actions in the Pacific Theatre including, but not limited to, the Guadalcanal Campaign, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and the Recapture of Corregidor.

The President expresses his concern that the United States was still in conversation with Japanese government and its Emperor looking towards the continuation of peace in the pacific. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was one of the most atrocious attacks to have ever happened on American soil, starting with disagreement on the Potsdam declaration. Japan’s greed for more land and industrial materials led the Japanese to make a plan to keep the United States out of the war, which consisted the use of kamikaze pilots and bombs to destroy our aircraft carriers and boats in an attempt to control the Pacific. While leaving the drowning, and dead bodies of thousands of American seamen and battleships at the bottom of the sea, seemed to be a good idea to the Japanese; America joined World War II and introduced the first nuclear weapons as reprisal for the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Had the Japanese agreed to an unconditional surrender and end to militarism during the agreement on the Potsdam declaration, the introduction to nuclear weapons and the death count wouldn’t have been so high and devastating on both the American and Japanese sides.

Even before the battle started, America saw his attack coming. Japan had bombed the Dutch harbor in Alaska on the days of June 3rd and 4th. Japan landed there instead of on the islands of Attu and Kiska, in fear the United States might be there. The events for the Japanese side begin on December 12, 1932 when Isoroku Yamamoto was appointed Director of the Aeronautical Department of the Navy Ministry. He inspired reliance and assurance with the opportunity to make the air fleet a resourceful part for the Navy. He established a long needed driving force toward the future. It was Yamamoto's temperament that also had to do with his strategy and lead on his next groundwork. Yamamoto's assessment of the war with the United States came from his extensive research he did while attending Harvard University and his service as naval ambassador in Washington.
