How could you handle your life with dominant men? Would it make any change in your life? If you are interested about this, you must check out the short story of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper.” This short story takes place during the time in male dominance culture. It tells the life of a woman named Jane. Jane has mental trouble after the delivered of her first child and is controlled by her husband, John. John is a physician, who will be the charge of Jane’s health. He wants to do everything that is best for his wife so that she can overcome her condition. However, Jane feels uncomfortable in the way he treats her. He forces her to do everything in his way like pick the room and locked her inside. When his wife, Jane, delivers their first child, Jane begins having symptoms of a nervous condition. She seems to be getting worse every day and trying to overcome the symptoms of depression and loneliness. John restricts her behavior from involving any activity and is controlling every decision of her life. In the passage, she says “I don't like our room a bit. I wanted one downstairs that opened on the piazza and had roses all over the window, and such pretty old-fashioned chintz hangings! But John would not hear of it” (2). In this case, John seems very stubborn when forcing his wife to stay in a room that does not make her happy and comfortable.
