World War I, was also known as the Great War. It lasted from July 28, 1914 until November 11, 1918. There were several causes, the beginning of the war, the U.S involvement, what happens when the war ends, Peace without Victory, and the postwar economy booms. Several causes of World War I were nationalism, economic rivalries, imperial ambitions, and militarism. Nationalism played a big role in a cause because it was among Europe, from Germany, italy, Austria-Hungary, to Russia, France and Britain. Germany at the time was the strongest in the economic and military power in Europe. Germany wanted to expand the national pride that arose in this country to other parts of Europe. There were many things involved, including weapons, troops and people involved, and the stalemate. There were several weapons involved, including rifles and tanks. The British main rifle was the Lee-Enfield .303. The Germans used the Gewehr 98 rifle. Barbed Wire was also used. “It snagged on equipment and clothing and slowed attackers, who were often prime targets for snipers as they desperately tried to disentangle themselves.”( Abayawickrema) American brought in Machine guns invented by Hiram Maxim. This gun could fire 400 rounds a minute. Poison gas was another main weapon. The German’s first used chlorine gas and the British later in the war developed mustard gas. Aircraft were used and this led to dog fights in the sky. Tanks were a huge weapon, developed by Winston Churchill. The last most known weapon was U-boats or submarines. The Germans were the main users of these. The people who learned how to make propaganda also made the advertisements for customers to buy products. A big industry that arose along with the automobile was the credit industry. This allowed people to buy items that they did not have money for and put a small deposit down and pay the rest later. This was also a big industry, thus “many Americans started to think that they deserved a little luxury, or that they should try and keep up with their neighbours’ lifestyles.
