“For two months the fugitives remained absent…” (116). Since Catherine is sick Edgar and Nelly have been with her for two months trying to take care of her while she is sick.. She is doesn’t get better, but does find out she is pregnant. Isabella and Heathcliff give Heathcliff a letter asking for his forgiveness. Edgar receives the letter, but doesn’t respond to her she sends a letter to Nelly talking about how Hindley is super interested with Heathcliff who is now in charge of Wuthering Heights. She also discusses how HIndley plans to kill Heathcliff, so that he can have all the power and fortunes, but she thinks it’s a bad idea therefore asking Nelly to come to Wuthering Heights to see her. She asks for Heathcliff to forgive her for everything she caused him, but he says he cannot give her forgiveness because she made it hard for him to forgive. Edgar comes back home, but Catherine asks Heathcliff not to leave. He stays with her as Edgar comes towards her room Nelly yells and Catherine faints. Heathcliff goes to catch her and puts her into Edgar’s arms when he gets into the room. Nelly pushes Heathcliff out and tells him she will keep him updated on Catherine. Heathcliff states he will stay in the garden, so that he can be close to Catherine. Catherine has her baby, but it is born a couple months too early. Catherine dies hours after giving birth and Nelly tells Heathcliff although he kind of already knows. Edgar protects Catherine’s body during the night and Heathcliff hangs around the garden. Edgar leaves and Nelly let's Heathcliff come around the body for a little bit. HIndley gets an invitation to Catherine’s funeral, but chooses to not come however Isabella was never given an invitation. Cathy contains power in death. In a criticism by Daniel Burt, he notes that Cathy in a way shows dominance over Heathcliff in her death. Instead of Heathcliff’s love for Cathy eventually diminishing, he yearns for her even more. He completely loses himself growing unbelievably mad in love he holds for the lady. For instance, one night Heathcliff wanders over to Cathy’s place to visit her once more. The typical meeting morphed into a horrific night. Nelly passes a message Heathcliff never expected to hear. She explains to him that the love his life Cathy passed away from the sickness she drove herself into. Heathcliff cries in a vicious roar, “Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest as long as I am living! You said I killed you-haunt me, then!” (Bronte 87). He permits her to taunt and torture him after Cathy’s death. This opens the door for Cathy to continue her reign over Heathcliff. He does not care on any level about the consequences of his wish or actions may bring. Sometimes when people betray others they will sometimes regret what they did or said. That is where guilt comes into the picture, and a sense of guilt is felt which is horrible. In the novel ‘The Kite Runner’ this occurs throughout it. This quote expresses this “There is a way to be good again”- Rahim Khan, the significance of this is that Rahim is saying that there is a way; forgiveness ties into this because you can forgive yourself, you just have to learn how to. Heathcliff's love for Catherine transcends the normal physical "true love" into spiritual love. He can withstand anything against him to be with her. After Hindley became the master of Wuthering Heights, he flogged Heathcliff like a slave. Although Heathcliff could have simply run away, his decision to endure the physical pains shows his unrelenting devotion to Catherine. Fortunately, Catherine feels as deeply for Heathcliff as he does for her, explaining to Nelly that "Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same…" Their love for each other is so passionate that they can not possibly live apart. At Catherine's death, Heathcliff hopes that she will not rest, but will haunt him until he dies. This absurdity contradicts the traditional norm that one should pray that the dead rest in peace. Near the end of the novel, we learn that Catherine has haunted Heathcliff, allowing him only fleeting glances of her. This shows that despite their physical separation, nothing can part them spiritually. When Heathcliff dies and unites with Catherine once again, the neighbors see them haunt the moors. The complicated nature surrounding Heathcliff’s motives again adds an additional degree of ambiguity to his character. This motivation is primarily driven by Catherine’s marriage to Edgar and past rejection of Heathcliff, since he was a servant whom Hindley disapproved of. Prior to storming out of Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff overhears Catherine say, “It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now…” (Brontë 87). The obstacles that ultimately prevent Heathcliff from marrying Catherine provide insight into Heathcliff’s desire to bring harm to Edgar and Hindley. The two men play prominent roles in the debacle, Edgar as the new husband and Hindley as the head figure who refused Heathcliff access to Catherine. The situation is terrible: Catherine is married to a man she does not love and she is more than happy to fix the problem by cheating on her husband with Heathcliff. The situation worsens when she refuses to attempt to conceal this from her husband. As Edgar, her husband, is arriving and Heathcliff, her lover, is leaving, she tells Heathcliff “‘You must not go!” (Bronte 103). Then, acting as the voice of reason, Catherine’s servant asks Heathcliff: “‘Will you ruin her, because she has not wit to help herself?’” (Bronte 103). When Heathcliff stays, it shows a lack of empathy and just how blatantly they do not care about the effects of their immoral actions. This will irreparably “ruin” Catherine’s reputation, yet they do not have the foresight to cease or at least conceal their actions. Catherine Earnshaw appears to be a woman who is free spirited. However, Catherine is also quite self-centered. She clearly states that her love for Edgar Linton does not match how much she loves Heathcliff. She is saying that she does love both, and she is unwilling to give one up for the other; she wants “Heathcliff for her friend”. Catherine admits that her love for Linton is “like the foliage in the woods”; however, her love for Heathcliff “resembles the eternal rocks beneath”. She loves Heathcliff and yet she gives him up and marries Linton instead, Catherine believes that if she marries Heathcliff it would degrade and humiliate her socially.
The sympathetic part of Heathcliff shows through when he sees Catherine in the beginning stages of her sickness after childbirth. “He neither spoke, nor loosed his hold, for some five minutes, during which period he bestowed more kisses than ever he gave in his life before, I dare say…” (159). The sympathetic part of Heathcliff kicks in when he sees the woman he loves dying right before him. Heathcliff began to ask Catherine the questions he had not been able to ask her before, whether it had been due to his pride or to his absence - was insignificant., “‘...You loved me - then what right had you to leave me? What right - answer me - for the poor fancy you felt for Linton?” (162). When the novel begins, it is mentioned that Heathcliff is shouting, “‘Come in! Come in!’ he sobbed. ‘Cathy, do come. Oh do - once more! Oh! My heart’s darling, hear me this time - Catherine, at last!’” (28). Heathcliff attempts to get Catherine’s ghost to speak to him, because his main goal is to be united with her in death. Heathcliff’s character changes relatively fast when he sees Catherine dying in her bed. Catherine is trapped between her love of Heathcliff and her love for Edgar, setting the two men down a path of destruction, a whirlwind of anger and resentment that Catherine gets caught in the middle of. Catherine is drawn to Heathcliff because of his fiery personality, their raw attraction and one certainly gets the sense that they are drawn together on a deeper level, that perhaps they are soulmates. C. Day Lewis thought so, when he declared that Heathcliff and Catherine "represent the essential isolation of the soul...two halves of a single soul–forever sundered and struggling to unite." This certainly seems to be backed up in the novel when Catherine exclaims “Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He's always, always in my mind--not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being...” This shows clearly the struggle Catherine feels as she is drawn spiritually to Heathcliff, but also to Edgar for very different reasons. From being isolated in the moors of England, with only the two houses-Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. And those are placed 4 miles apart from each other. Having grown up at Wuthering Heights, Catherine, Hindley, and Heathcliff all suffer from a lack of love and structure. Wuthering Heights is a very bleak and dark place, that isn’t too happy. None of them found happiness until they fled from that dreary place that they call home. Heathcliff is grumpy and mean, and wants to inflict that on everyone else around him. Hurt people, hurt people. As opposed to Thrushcross Grange, which is more structured. Edgar and Isabella are more compassionate people, because of the love that they received from their parents. It also leaves them vulnerable to Catherine and Heathcliff’s aggressive nature, as well as a ploy in Heathcliff’s plan. Knowing this, Catherine is only stuck with two options-marry Heathcliff or Edgar. Based on the decision she made (good or bad, depending on the person) it started a spiral of events that currently effects Linton, Hareton, and Cathy. The same thing is to be said about Cathy. During the first half of the book, Catherine showed different types of love for two different people. Her love for Heathcliff was her everything, it was her identity to love and live for Heathcliff but as soon as she found out how society views Heathcliff, she sacrificed their love and married Edgar Linton in the hopes of saving Heathcliff from Hindley and protecting him from the eyes of society.
