The mental illness that I have chosen is Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disease that slowly destroys how you think and your memory. This disease makes it hard to carry out the normal daily functions. Alzheimer’s typically appears in people age 65 and older. This disease causes tangles in the brain and is two of the most important features of Alzheimer’s. The next leading cause is the loss of connections that connect the neurons in the brain. There is treatment for the stabilization of patients, but there is no cure. “One in nine people age 65 and older have Alzheimer’s disease. This equals to about 11 percent of people. About one-third of people 85 and older have this disease. This is equal to about 32 percent of the total population. This disease is more common in women than it is in men. Allie and her husband Noah write down everything that has happened in their life. When Allie begins to go down hill with the Alzheimer’s disease, Noah begins to read her their story. Noah goes to the nursing home that Allie lives in every day. Everyday he reads to her about an event that happened in their life. Noah loves spending time with her, even if she has no idea who he is. Sometimes Allie will not recognize Noah and she will begin to freak out, but the nurses comfort her, and usually Noah is able to talk to her. One time in the movie it is required that Allie be sedated, because she cannot handle the fact that she is not normal, and she does not know who Noah is, where she is, or what is going to with her. By the end of the movie Allie does not even know who anyone is. Allie and Noah end up living in the same nursing home. Before they die, Allie remembers who he is, and they spend their last living night together. Allie and Noah eventually die together at the same time in the nursing

It is estimated that 26 million people world-wide are afflicted by Alzheimer’s and of those, approximately 4.5 million live in the United States. It is said to be the seventh leading cause of death in the USA and the fifth leading cause of death for those over age 65. Seventeen percent of women and ten percent of men age 55 and older can expect to develop Alzheimer’s (apa.org, 2009). Researchers report that this disease is more prevalent in African Americans and Hispanics than in whites (Crandell, Crandell, and Zanden, 2009, p. 578).
Mental illness can be a mixture of different factors. You can get mental illness through genetics meaning that it is passed down within the family. That can only happen if the mental illness is heredity. Another factor of mental illness is psychological trauma. Psychological trauma like abuse, or loss can cause some mental illnesses. When mental illness is untreated it makes it difficult for the person to function in society and deal with everyday life. The different types of mental illnesses range from anxiety disorders to personality disorders. Noah reads their love story to Allie everyday in hopes that she will remember him and everything they have experienced together. Throughout most of the day as he reads to her, she does not recall that the story is about herself and Noah. She also does not remember who her children and grandchildren are when they come to visit. I will begin with what I remember of my experience of learning I have mental health illness. I remember suffering heavily through my early teens to my twenties with depression. I had tried at that time just about every type of depression medication available and none of them worked on me. It wasn't until I was in my twenties that my depression just kind of went away. I thought I was done with suffering from mental health problems, but I would be wrong.

The following disorders could be described as being well-known and widespread disorders: depression, bi-polar disorder, Alzheimer's, and OCD, which could also be called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. All of these mental disorders can be very dangerous and possibly deadly if people don't receive the proper care in order to be able to contain these disorders. Out of these very dangerous and possibly deadly disorders, I believe that Alzheimer's is the most interesting disorder. I think that Alzheimer's is the most interesting disorder, because I think we have the least about of knowledge of the Alzheimer's disorder. As a society we still to this day don't have a cure that totally stops this disorder.

The man, Noah, is a poet in Allie's eyes and he expresses love as, "Our souls were one, if you must know and never shall they be apart; With splendid dawn, your face aglow I reach for you and find my heart" (183). As teenagers, the two of these "love birds" had one summer of intense passion that was ended abruptly by Allie's parents disapproval. When Allie left New Bern the couple planned to keep in touch by writing letters, but because Allie's moms did not approve of Noah, she hid all his letters from her without Allie knowing. Noah continued to write but without a reply, his hopes dissolved. While Noah sat on his porch playing his guitar with his three-legged dog Clem, he reminisced about the adventures they had, foreshadowing the events that followed. "And if, in some distant place in the future, we see each other in our new lives, I will smile at you with joy, and remember how we spent a summer beneath the trees, learning from each other and growing in love. And maybe, for a brief moment, you'll feel it too, and you'll smile back, and savor the memories we will always share together" (151). There are surprises one would never expect and descriptions that one can't even imagine; they pull the reader in and paint a picture in the mind. This novel will make the reader cry, gasp, sigh, and cry once more.

This theme is a big lesson learned throughout the whole story of Allie and Noah. She loves Noah with all of her heart when she is a young woman, and yet when they were separated for a period of time she finds her way back to him. When Allie sees Noah again for the first time in years, she realizes she never stopped loving him and her heart belongs to him. When she has to choose between Noah and Lon, she follows her heart and chooses the man to whom she loves most.
The couple spent the summer together and developed the meaning of true love. One evening, Noah takes Allie, to an old farmhouse, tells her his dream of buying and restoring it one day, she tells him she wants to be a part of that dream, she wants the house white, have blue shutters, a wrap-around porch, and wants a room that overlooks the creek so she can paint. With all the excitement the two lost track of time and when she returned home she found out her parents called the police; her parents forbid her to ever see Noah again. Allies parents did not approve of the social differences in the teens upbringing. Allie’s mother moved her away to New York, for her to forget Noah, and interact with people of her social lifestyle at college.
