Imagine not being able to reach into your refrigerator and pull out a snack. Think about those mornings when you forget to eat breakfast and your stomach is growling the whole morning. Now imagine not being able to suppress that feeling. Imagine feeling that hunger day after day. This is reality for almost a sixth of the world’s population. Is there any good news? Yes there is. There are many ways for us to reduce world hunger. This essay will look at the causes of world hunger as well as short-term, and long-term, solutions. World hunger can be solved using a combination of ideas and people working together.

In the first world there are 9 million people suffering from hunger. In Canada, the HungerCount survey, organized by Food Banks Canada, counted the number of people using food banks and analysed their living conditions. The hunger issue in Canada has to do with poverty. Only 6% of food bank users own their own home. Even with social assistance, which over 50% of food bank users are receiving as their main source of income, these people cannot meet their basic needs. Child hunger is also an issue in Canada, where 37% of food bank users are children. When a household’s income is too low, the children suffer. Many parents don’t have the time to take care of their children and work at the same time. Although these facts are about Canada, there are the similar issues facing people all over the first world.

According to a few world hunger organizations, the five main causes of hunger in the third world are natural disasters, war, the poverty trap, agricultural infrastructure and over-exploitation of resources.
