Hello and welcome to the Circle. Today I will be interviewing the director of wonder woman, Hollywood’s Top-Grossing Live Action Title By Female Director, Patty Jenkins. So Patty, how did you first get into the film industry? After my family moved to Kansas, I became interested in the arts, I started studying music and photography in high school then I attended Cooper Union for painting, that was until I went to my first experimental filmmaking class, They had a Steenbeck editing bay, and the first generation of video editing equipment, the Toaster. I sat there day in, day out, putting music to image, never wanting to stop, It was the first time I had a completely truthful relationship to art. Hopefully Wonder Woman will inspire people to be a hero, but their own kind of hero. You don’t have to be the toughest character in the world to change it — her greatest power is her love and goodness. That is where her physical strength really stems from — having the bravery to do it, alone and against all odds, despite not being sure you can succeed. That is a hero and that is Wonder Woman. What was your objective when making the film? I wanted to make the very best version of very mainstream movie for all ages from the start. I wanted Wonder Woman to be that kind of classic film, and I was able to get just the amount of subtle adult story beneath it that I wanted to get in there, so the film really is the film I wanted to make. Do you think popular entertainment has a political responsibility? Certainly. One of my favourite things about this movie is that being a brave and thoughtful hero is a lesson and that is wonderful to hand down. It’s not about fame and luck, it’s hard to do the right thing, and you might be alone in doing it Why did you want to make Wonder Woman? I wanted to make the film because the character is compelling, and the story was interesting. The film has a universal appeal. I always knew that Wonder Woman would make an arresting screen
