Women have been in the military for many years. There was never an enormous problem with women being in the military until recent years. Most women quit before they even start because they believe the people that say they will not be able to make it. People believe that the only need for women in the military is for nurses or cooks, but that is not the case for some women. They do not get pushed to sign up or pushed to quit. Women should be allowed to be in combat because they willingly sign up, have been in war for years, and go through boot camp just like men (Supporters). According to Anu Bhagwat, a former Marine captain and executive director of the Service Women’s Action Network, said “the prohibition on women in combat is archaic, it does not reflect the many sacrifices and contributions that women make in the military.” (CBSNews). The military made a report that prohibited women from being assigned to any unit smaller than a brigade, which prohibited them from serving in roughly 10 percent of the Marine Corps and Army occupational specialties and keeps them from advancing in the branch they are in. The marines opened 21 battalions, including artillery, tanks and engineers to female officers. The Army will open assignments for women who already qualify for open military occupational specialties. During the war in Iraq, there were 110 women and 4,300 men that died (CBSNews). Even though there is a big debate about it, people believe that women will continue to serve in combat, which they have trained for and are ready to respond to all of it. Over the last few years, many jobs have opened to women including special operations units. Every person in the military, whoever they may be, should have equal opportunity to work their way up the totem pole. Women should be allowed in combat because of their training skills and are able to learn easily
