Women In the Media It wasn 't too long ago that woman began showing up on television, movies, and the media in general. For many years men were portrayed in the media more often than women because they “had a tough time gaining access to production, either as trained professionals or citizens” (Byerly & Ross 2). Men dominated both television and jobs within the media. They could be actors, directors, producers or writers. Men had many opportunities that women did not. They couldn’t get as many jobs as men but along the way they slowly began to gain more access into the media. They had the chance to become journalists, actresses and even directors. There are less female journalists and news anchors than men. Overall the media doesn’t explore outside of what is seen as the norm. Women tend to be portrayed in the most basic forms and are always seen as the same whether it’s on a television show, a movie, or the cover of a magazine. Not only do women get little representation on screen but they are also “less likely to be seen in important roles behind the scenes” (“Women In The Media”). Many changes have been made but there is still work to be done on the way that the media portrays women. There are producers, cinematographers, writers, directors and many more but women only make up a small portion of them. Since men dominate most jobs they get to make all major decisions within film and television shows. If they are making a female character it’s from their point of view which isn’t always accurate because they are, of course, male and they don’t necessarily have the same experiences as women. Small things like this make major differences in the roles that are written out. There are only so many parts that a woman can get because since men do most writing sometimes the roles are similar. A study shows that when more women are in charge, more women get hired to write and act (“Women Working In The Media”).
