When you ask a group of people on the street to name a music composer, a large percentage would name Mozart. This should come as no surprise. The music of Wolfgang Mozart has become internationally known as some of the most famous and recognizable classical music. Not only that, but his music has been incorporated into famous films, television, and even a brain development program for infants! But who was Mozart, and why has his acclaim and compositions lasted the test of time? Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria on January 27, 1756. He had a mother and father who were musicians, Maria and Leopold Pertl Mozart, as well as an older sister, Maria Anna. Leopold wanted his children to be influenced by music and began teaching his daughter piano at age seven. At age four he could learn a piece of music in half an hour, and by age six he was performing publicly and began writing his own symphonies. At around this time, the family began going on tour across Europe, performing in the courts of Munich, Paris and London. Mozart met many famous composers during his tours, including Johann Sebastian Bach, who would end up having a strong influence on him. By the time Mozart was thirteen, he and his sister had toured extensively across Europe.
However, while his sister had to quit touring and prepared to find a husband, Wolfgang was appointed the assistant concertmaster to the Archbishop at the age of seventeen. It was during this time that Mozart expanded his repertoire with several new pieces, as well as developing a penchant for violin and piano concertos.
