War's Reality: Shattering Heroic Ideals

The human mind seem to neglect the reality of war because it is much easier to envision war heroes than a soldier cursed with PTSD. The ideals of war among humans have a tendency to describe war as if it were a positive experience. It's not all fun and games when you are face to face with the enemy and death is breathing down your neck, showing you the literal meaning behind the figurative saying, “scared half to death”. Paul Baumer and Lt Hans von Witzland both entered a war in which their heroic and glorious ideals of war would be proven wrong. The horrific nature of war does not only impact a persons ideals of war. Paul Baumer and Lt. His ideals of heroism and bravery were also crushed by the reality of war. The first sign of Witzland becoming out of touch with himself was in an offensive battle in which the Soviets were better equipped than the German army. This sign of desensitization was a very strong one because it truly shows the neglect of emotion and feeling in order to survive. Witzland was advancing with his comrades when a mounted machine gun began to saw down the Germans; the remaining Germans took cover in shell craters and used the wounded and dead bodies of their comrades as shields from the high caliber rounds. The german army did not care about the lives of its soldiers which was often unsettling because they were willing to send their infantry forces to face off against anything. There were times in the war where a battle was fought with an insufficient number of guns and ammunition. This was a dehumanizing event because even if you didn't have a gun, you were still expected to charge across the battlefield and if the man in front of you was to die, you take his gun and fight. This played a big part in the corrosion of Witzland’s heroic ideals of war. Witzland was forced to enter battle alongside soldiers who didnt have reliable weaponry. This caused Witzlands ideals of war to be destroyed because he was able to see how little the life of a German soldier was worth. Another savagery of war that disproved Witzlands ideals of war was being forced to watch dozens of men around you drop dead but rather than acknowledge these deaths he kept advancing to find cover. If Witzland were to try and comprehend what you just witnessed he would end up dead because you are no longer focused on survival when you are mourning the death of other individuals. Witzland’s behavior changes throughout his time in battle. One pattern he exhibits is a diminishing respect for rules. As Witzland becomes more and more distant with
