The Salem Hysteria started in 1691 in Massachusetts. When Betty Parris and Abigail Parris heard stories about witchcraft from their slave Tituba, they started having visions and sharp pains. When they went to the doctor the doctor said it was witch craft. So the girls started blaming women that were poor, had low social class, and did not go to church of witchcraft. They even said that their slave Tituba was using witchcraft. Once they stared accusing higher class people the court started questioning if the girls were actually telling the truth. Once the court realized they had made a mistake they made a day of mourning and silence for all the people they wrongfully accused and killed of witchcraft.

Tituba, as well other female characters in this book are continually pushed around because of their gender. Anytime a woman tried to defend her human rights she was punished for it in the most extreme way possible. Maryse Condé takes on race, gender, religion, the idea of America as a land of wealth, the idea of the victim’s guilt, revenge, sexuality, and many other powerful motifs, and weaves them together in Tituba.

During this time, colonist were greatly afraid of the devil, and his the people he sent to do his work. Salem was known for being a community that was extremely devoted to their Christian beliefs. The witch trial in Salem, Massachusetts that occurred in February 1692 to May 1693, were there version of accusations based on malicious intentions. Such as the world is today by branding individuals with racism or those coming from a particular area with poverty, by labeling them as criminals and murderers. The price of those who were accused of being witches had serious repercussions, such as losing their wealth, their social profile crumbling in front of their eyes, and worst of all was death by hanging. During the Salem witch trials women had less authority during the Puritan society, they were devalued and were seen as human sacrifices in order to keep harmony in the community. Their lack of authority occurred because many men felt that God was viewed as male, did not want females to established feminine authority that could challenge the faith they followed or the principles they follow since birth.

Twenty people died during the trials, they could’ve been saved if it wasn’t for the vengeful accusers just out for revenge, or even just a laugh. Many women were falsely accused of witchcraft during the late 1600s, the most memorable of them being Tituba Indian and Sarah Good. A famous group of accusers, the afflicted girls, also played a large role in the start of witchcraft.

Other ways to keep fire safe are never leaving a candle in the reach of children. Not only can it cause a fire, it can always cause severe burning of the skin. Placing a lit candle in the bedroom is risky because people fall asleep in there and can leave the candle burning.
