Wilma Mankiller, Native Rights activist and former principle chief of the Cherokee Nation, in the video Wilma Mankiller: Challenges Facing 21st Century Indigenous People, speaks of the Indigenous people’s past and future. The Indigenous people have always relied on cooperation for their survival. In their communities, it is not the wealthy or powerful who command respect, but those who help others and understand the meaning of reciprocity. These communities have stories and ceremonies which remind them of the gifts of nature, and the miracles surrounding the world. Mankiller notes this to be a deciding difference between Indigenous and non-indigenous people, and that it explains the lack of ability to protect the environment. It went against everything she stood for. Mankiller talked about a book she read which documents the complete destruction of one African tribe’s social, cultural, and economic infrastructure. Their land was taken, the leaders were discredited, the men in power were mocked, and all the children were sent far away to boarding schools. Mankiller believed this story was quite similar to the history of the Indigenous people. In the end of her speech, Mankiller praises the communities for keeping their responsibilities to their lands and each other, even after having to reinvent their identities.
