The Greatest Playwright Ever Known to Man Who is the greatest playwright of all time? In A&E Biography, William Shakespeare is described as “the greatest playwright the English language has ever known.” Shakespeare lived a mysterious life in England, wrote many plays, and was an asset to The Globe theater in his lifetime. Shakespeare’s life in Elizabethan England was rather secretive. Education was taken very seriously, but he dropped out of school at age 14 to become his father’s apprentice. Due to his parents not having enough money, he did not attend university. Anne Hathaway became his wife when he was 18 because she was pregnant with his child. Little is known about Shakespeare’s marriage and his life during his early adult years, but he began working in London when he was around 28 years old. At first, Shakespeare was an actor, but eventually he became a playwright. He lived away from his wife and three children, visiting only during Lent when performances were prohibited in London. …show more content…

Shakespeare was the playwright of many successful plays during his lifetime. Mary, his mother, was very influential, sending him to school for long hours where he spoke both Latin and English. Watching the traveling players in his hometown of Stratford was his first experience with plays. While he was in London, he wrote 37 plays in approximately 20 years of living there. The plays Shakespeare wrote were derived from stories others told him first, he did not create the stories himself.
