Will History Forgive Richard Nixon?
Nixon’s death caused a great scandal; he being the only U.S. president who was forced to resign from office caught many people’s attention. Richard M. Nixon died in April 1994 by age 81. He was born in California and was also the second child of five. His family moved to Whittier, California, Nixon was nine years old and thanks to his mother he became really good at politics and debating. Through his school years he ended up earning a tuition pay scholarship to Duke University Law School and also graduated number three of his class in 1937.
Finally after graduating from the Duke University he went back to Whittier, where he worked in al old law firm for various years. Nixon wanted something bigger than that old law firm, but World War II interfered and he ended up working in the distribution of tired for the Office of Price Administration in Washington, D.C. before he actually took part in the war as a lieutenant in the navy. Before he was done with his active duty the Republicans started asking him if he could run for a seat in California’s 12th congressional district in the House of Representatives. In 1930 for the first time the Republicans obtained control of Congress.
Joan Hoff-Wilson believes that history will not forgive Nixon for different reason. Nixon became the United States president at a demanding crisis. After the war there was an agreement on two things; which were: the efficiency of domestic policies of the New Deal and the requirements of the foreign policies of the Cold War. In 1960’s these two things started to break down and caused damages. By 1968 Richard Nixon occupied the highest office in the land. ...government’s executive branch and also attempted to reorganize the federal bureaucracy. This is what Professor Joan Hoff-Wilson believes and finds it true about Nixon. The welfare grew when he was president, programs were successfully carried out, and segregation decreased by lowering the percentage of only black schools from 68% to 8%. Hoff-Wilson gave specific examples of what Nixon has done. On the other hand Professor Kutler focuses on the bad things that Nixon has done. Even though Nixon abused of his presidential power he managed to find ways to help people. Kutler’s focal point was the negative side of Nixon’s personality and his corruption. This was all known thanks to Haldeman’s diaries. At the end Nixon was a president of the United States none of the presidents are the same and they make different mistakes but many have done great things to this country.
