Over the past 15 years, cell phones have become more and more technologically advanced to the point that they are used in every aspect of our lives. They are there to wake us up in the mornings, they help us keep in touch, they give answers to questions in the matter of seconds, they keep us on top of our to do list, and they play music to help us fall asleep. The big question is, why would they not be incorporated into the classroom? Yes there is some missuses of cell phones in class, but if used, and monitored correctly, they can be a great tool. This however has resulted in many students coming to school with cell phones, not only being a distraction to those around them, but a disruption to the whole class. Some students have been caught sending receiving text and voice messages in class, while others have been caught cheating on tests. Also, criminal charges have resulted from students using cell phones to send inappropriate messages and images that is viewed as pornography. This has resulted in schools to ban use of cell phones in the classroom, while others have outright banned them from school grounds all together. One incident occurred when a student's cell phone rang during class. The teacher confiscated the phone, and assigned the student one day of in school suspension. The phone was given to the administrators, and upon the parent's attempt to get it back, they were denied. They took it to court an sued the school. At some point every parent deals with the request for cell phone, but nowadays kids younger and younger are asking. 21% of kids 8 years and younger have a cellphone. Most teens nowadays spend an average of 6 hours on their phone each day. As there is many pros and cons to the situation I believe that kids younger than middle school should not have cell phones, therefore parents should wait until at least middle school to give their children cell phones. First off having a cellphone is always nice incase of an emergency, promotes independence for kids, and helps you keep in touch with your kids, but if you are 8 years old you are usually never by yourself, and you are usually with a parent.
