The Duty of Americans to Their Country and Themselves (Reinstating the Draft for the American People) The American military draft was put into affect in 1940 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act. The draft was a system that was an involuntary requirement of those who were of age and proper health. Young American men between the ages of eighteen and twenty five who were in good health and of a stable mental state were required by the government to register. These men would register with the Selective Service therefore they could be found easily in a time of need. But in 1980, President Carter reinstated the draft in a way, stating all men born after January 1, 1960 were require to register with Selection Service, but this was not reinforced after about he of 1986. Today, the question is debated about whether or not we, as Americans, should reinstate the draft. Those in favor of reinstating the draft argue that our country would be safer, those drafted would learn important lifelong lessons and build characteristics that today’s generation has lost, and Americans would learn to appreciate more, something our society has forgotten. Those who oppose the draft argue that there would not be many, if any, families that are not military based and have to worry about loosing people in their family. America has become a nation, for who knows what reason, of lazy, low, ungrateful people. The draft may be able to bring back some work ethic, drive, and pride amongst the American people. It may teach the young men and women to put effort and pride into their work and appreciate what they have been given because once they serve they know what it takes by the unnoticed to keep the country a free place, so we can enjoy what we love. The service of the young men and women, maybe what it takes to get the rest of the country off its butt to do something and be something that is worth protecting. Too many Americans have made it the new normal to be lazy, sit on the couch, be unemployed, and take hand-outs from the government, which is completely pathetic and embarrassing! Therefore, if the majority of the nation isn’t going to do anything to be proud of, why should they have the chance to do anything? Well if we are going to make young Americans serve to protect this country to keep it free from the horrors of the world, we as citizens should take notice and appreciate it and live life to its fullest potential and make something of ourselves.
