Why We Should Not Be Tuition Free In College Essay

As a young person, there is nothing more important than looking at college. There's only one problem, however, and that is tuition cost. Everyone dreads taking out loans just to go to school, but what most people don't realize is that having tuition is better than not. Public colleges and universities should not be tuition free.

A decrease in college tuition would mean the increase of taxes and overall good and services to compensate the lack of money in the government. Jeff Jacoby, a columnist at the Boston Globe, points out that if tuition free college were to be a reality, the students would later "really feel the burn" when they entered the workforce "from tax rates that had to be increased to accommodate the half-trillion-dollar cost" that would have been theirs to pay if tuition was not free (Shutterstock). Grover Whitehurst wrote an article about how class sizes affect student performance. They mention a study that showed that when the class size was reduced by thirty two percent, the students performed better four years later as if they had taken three more months of schooling (Whitehurst).
