Why Students Need A College Education

If I had attended private schools for my education prior to college, would I have gotten the “right” kind of education that would help me be a better student going into undergraduate school? It is hard to say, but I would strongly say no because I have known students who went to private grade school and then went to universities and have felt a deficiency in their learning. I believe that paying for education is the same as paying for water, we all need it-so why are we having to pay for it? In order to create citizens who will change makers, students need the right about of challenge and the right amount of support (Sanford as cited by Jones & Abes, 2011, p.153). While I understand that challenge and support are important, students do not need to pay a ridiculous amount of money to get this. Student affairs professionals should be able to challenge and support their students even if the students are enrolled in a zero credit class.
My values and beliefs align with student affairs. The stipulation is that the education system that is in place do not align with the student affairs professionals and that is the disconnect. Many student affairs professionals believe in helping students and they see that education is over priced, but their hands are tied because it is hard to change the system. I know there are critiques who believe that education is for those who have money. I know it will be extremely difficult to find the words to prove that education should be free. My philosophy will influence my entire career because while I am helping a student, I will always be thinking how are they paying for this education. Most of my career will be outside of the United States because I do not foresee the education system changing to fit the needs of the people and I cannot support that.
