Ninety-five percent of the world uses the metric system, so why does the United States not? The metric system is the decimal measuring system based on the meter, liter, and gram as units of length, capacity, and weight or mass respectively. At the moment, the United States uses the English imperial system, which has no rhyme or reason to it. The imperial system is a cluttered mess that is challenging to understand. Firstly, it is the universal language for many different things. For example, the basic language of science is in metric units. It is remarkably inconvenient for the citizens of the United States to have to either know the two systems or have to modify every single measurement. Also, the metric system is the primary language of international commerce. Currently, the U.S. has to make a special request to other countries to change the measurements of certain imports and exports to the imperial system. Even though traders in the United States occasionally do this themselves, it still an enormous inconvenience and wastes time. Finally, it would be easier for the U.S. to convert to the metric system because it would just be easier to communicate with countries who use the metric system. Citizens of the United States would no longer have to repeatedly explain about how many centimeters are in an inch, how many milliliters are a fluid ounce, or how many kilograms are in a pound. Again, international commerce would be considerably easier because converting would no longer be involved. While the metric system was spreading to every country, Britain was using the customary units of measurement to measure things. As the British started colonizing America, the customary system moved with them. From the time the Pilgrims landed in this great nation at Plymouth Rock, immigrants have been culturally diverse and have spoken many languages. When the Pilgrims arrived in the New World, they did not know how to communicate with the natives. Through intense study the natives learned the Pilgrims’ language. Even with the common language they were still a melting pot of different culture. Some would say that America has gotten over the language/ cultural barriers and now almost everyone speaks the common language of English, but there are still many immigrants who do not know English. Bilingual education is put into public schools for this reason, so that immigrant children can be assimilated to English gradually. The national language should be English instead of the official language because America has prided herself in being very diverse. If we take away the diversity, then we take away the core values that America has always had since her founding.
